How many presents are too many for a child?

one child only so far - 4 yrs old (currently pregnant, so next year wont be able to afford as much for two , specially on maternity pay). I know we got a lot - about 8-9 gifts, some of them bigger and few small ones. Family member is making me feel bad about it and now i am questioning myself if we (parents) are being silly and spoiling our child
I carefully buy gifts for a few months before Christmas if the thing i want is on sale etc so the cost is spread over 5 months or so and by no means i am well off but understand i am still in more fortunate position than others, i dont mean to upset anyone by my post

aibu - its too much
not aibu - its fine

It varies with age I've found - as they get older the size of boxes gets smaller and the cost tends to get higher per box. Mine are pre-teens now and as a general guide we have some personalised Santa sacks that are slightly larger than a pillowcase - and they tend to get that full. Usually one "bigger" thing (this year they got updated Kindles since they were using ones that were like 10 years old) and then small things like slippers, toiletries, makeup (praise Boots 3 for 2), books.

When they were younger and stuff came in bigger boxes it looked more excessive but probably cost about the same to be fair. Tended to be mountains of Playmobil to add to the other mountains of Playmobil but bloody hell that stuff got played with for years so we didn't begrudge it.

My 6 year old get £400/£450 for birthdays and Xmas at the moment so whatever in budget. Sometimes it 10 presents and sometimes it's 35/40

I buy little bits I see all year and carefully budget for Christmas, the kids are older now, youngest 17 and they get a huge pile of gifts, many are a few pounds but things they want/need. Then they always get a “main” gift. My MIL is the only grandparent they get from and she always gets a big bag of stuff between us all. My DC are lovely humans, they get “spoilt” twice a year and they know they’re fortunate.
