To not do a Christmas food shop?

ChristmasLightss · 23/12/2024 18:20

I don’t have much money (£50 until I get paid on Friday) this is our first Christmas without my ex husband, we have been split for 6 months. My mum and dad have told me not worry as they are doing Christmas dinner and have lots of food in for us. I just feel like I should do a Christmas food shop. I am not feeling this Christmas at all it all feels really strange.

If you aren't going to be there, honestly what's the point? You can only do what you can do x

ChristmasLightss · 23/12/2024 18:22

I feel like a failure because I only have £50 left. All the Christmas presents are bought, Christmas Eve boxes etc I just usually have a massive full fridge.

No. I think you should save your money as if you are going to your parents you don't really need anything. Have a good Christmas x

Dollshousedolly · 23/12/2024 18:22

If you’ve enough food and only £50 until Friday, then you don’t need a food shop. But if you want to get some chocolate/sweets/whatever, maybe use £15 of the £50 and get a few bits?

CrushOnEminem · 23/12/2024 18:23

Do you have food in to feed your children apart from christmas day with your parents?
I wouldn't worry about buying festive treats etc just focus on making sure you have proper food for dinners & lunches

flutterby1 · 23/12/2024 18:23

Get rid of the guilt, you can't afford it this year. Don't worry xxx

£15 goes nowhere these days does it.

No point. Ask if u can take something. Invite them.you.one weekend. Perhaps get yourself a treat to.have.

GrumpyCactus · 23/12/2024 18:25

This seems like an odd thing to worry over. Your parents have lots of food and your children have presents and presumably stuff to eat on Christmas eve and boxing day?

Like you we're going to relatives on Christmas day and don't have a fridge full of food because we won't need it.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 23/12/2024 18:25

You are being unreasonable to think that you need to do a Christmas food shop when you'll be at your parents who seem to be happy to provide the food. You are also being unreasonable for feeling like a failure when you have in fact got all your presents etc sorted and still have £50 left until the end of the week. Be kind to yourself!

justasking111 · 23/12/2024 18:25

We're out all over Christmas. I've cooked a ham for sandwiches, bought some cheese and crackers, some sweets, peanuts, crisps. That's it.

It does feel odd.

It doesn't sound like you're a failure at all, and you're being sensible not blowing what money you've got left.
Christmas can be hard for lots of folk, for lots of reasons, but I hope you enjoy the meal at your parents.

You could buy a box of quality streets , that's what I've done ...

AdoraBell · 23/12/2024 18:27

YANBU OP. Unless you really want to something like a specific dessert/nibbles then just accept your parents providing food.

i have 2 children aged 4 and 7. I have got them everything they want from Santa and spent an absolute fortune but not budgeted for the Christmas shop obviously.

It's actually odd because I did an enormous food shop today at M&S and it came to around 110. I have just said this to dh that if you spend £50 you could have a fabulous meal. I really think food in this country is insanely cheap. There are so many deals and offers, it's just incredible. I'm a very good cook and really do a feast, so I think 50 is enough to do something proper. BUT as you are going to your parents then it's not necessary at all to spend money if you don't need to. If you want to spend money why don't make a platter? Lots of fruit, cheese , some of those party food, a lovely dip, some chocolates in between? I doubt that would even be £50. Don't worry about having a full fridge, it feels like that's what it's about but not really.

Dollshousedolly · 23/12/2024 18:31

Remember you’ve one less adult in the house this year, so wouldn’t need to buy so much food anyway.

ChristmasLightss · 23/12/2024 18:31

I know. I think I am just a bit down and being hard on myself.

Aldi have loads of stuff in for about £1-2 a bag

ThinWomansBrain · 23/12/2024 18:32

If you feel a real need for a Christmas food shop, save it until tomorrow afternoon and buy some yellow sticker stuff.

2dogsandabudgie · 23/12/2024 18:36

If you are at your parents on Christmas Day and then get paid on Friday it's only Boxing Day that you have to think about. As your children are 4 and 7 they probably won't be bothered about Christmas food as such.

You could buy them a selection box each and just get a few treats.
