To find the phrase ‘we are pregnant’ really irritating?

It really winds me up. We are pregnant. We had a baby etc. NO!
It really irritates me because it seems to me like it is minimising the load that pregnancy and birth places on the mother. If my husband had used this phrase when I was pregnant I would have been insulted. I think women should be proud of their unique role and it seems as if some men wish to muscle in.

I agree, I find it pretty irritating as well.

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/12/2024 12:40

I agree. As you say it massively minimises the burden on the woman.

It's also just twee and cringe.

MumChp · 23/12/2024 12:42

I can handle 'you/we are having a baby'. Yes, both parents are but both are not pregnant. Weird thing to say.

Yoyokitten · 23/12/2024 12:43

Very irritating and cringe.
Also impossible.!!

longapple · 23/12/2024 12:45

I think 'we are having / had a baby' is fine, it's both of their child. 'We are pregnant' irritates me too.

HateMyLife887 · 23/12/2024 12:46

I think only first time mothers say it. Excited but also totally naive and unprepared for what is about to happen to them.

We are having a baby though is fine and accurate.

WalterdelaMare · 23/12/2024 12:46

I agree. Nauseatingly twee.

Goldengirl123 · 23/12/2024 12:56

Isn’t it just the most ridiculous thing? Apparently, it’s so the man doesn’t feel
left out!!!

TrainsCarsBoat · 23/12/2024 12:56

'We're having a baby' is fine - the baby couldn't exist without both parties. But yes, I do find 'we're pregnant' a bit cringe.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/12/2024 13:04

'We had a baby' is fine. But 'we are pregnant' is massively grating. I'm not sure exactly why, but put it this way, I would never ever say that personally.
It makes me almost want to turn to the man and say, 'good luck passing a baby through your penis. Or is the birth going to be anal?' 🤣

aname1234 · 23/12/2024 13:07

It's the shock/reality of it. A way to spread it over 2 people instead of 1.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 23/12/2024 13:08

It’s horrendous, but the enthusiasm is quite cute.

Can one smile AND roll their eyes?

I’m the same

Tarraleah · 23/12/2024 13:10

You are allowed to find it irritating.
Whoever is using the expression is allowed to like it.

Your opinion on what other people say doesn't matter.

toastofthetown · 23/12/2024 13:10

I find it annoying, but it’s not the end of the world either. I’ve also heard more women than men use the phrase, so I don’t think it’s about men trying to muscle in on pregnancy. Just probably trying to say they’re having a baby and either fumbled words, or didn’t put that much thought into wording it.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 23/12/2024 13:10

I dont like it either. One it's factually incorrect and two it vastly overstates the man's role.

PortiasBiscuit · 23/12/2024 13:11

It’s a partnership, I’m glad that the bloke is taking responsibility.

GrouachMacbeth · 23/12/2024 13:23

About as stupid as "falling pregnant". Unless you fall on an erect ejaculating penis.
