Very worried about relative

I'm very worried about my close relative. I know nobody on here can diagnose or really help but I guess I need a hand hold.

Relative not in the best of health mentally or physically. Has had episodes of stomach issues and rectal bleeding for a while but it got very bad around October time and she went to a&e following an episode where she was losing a lot of blood one evening. Scheduled a colonoscopy, diagnosed internal piles but couldn't do the full procedure due to an 'obstruction' which could have been scar tissue. They did another camera procedure (I forget the name of that one but it was more thorough) back in October. She didn't get any results back for weeks but has been given an appointment at hospital early January. She has since experienced a lot more diarrhoea episodes and significant bleeding.

I'm really freaking out that it could be something sinister but I'm trying to take comfort from the fact that if it were, they wouldn't leave it so long to discuss the results. Does anyone have any idea what else could cause such large amounts of blood loss? It's become debilitating for her when she has a flare up.

I've lost other relatives to cancer and I'm just very frightened.

I have no experience of this OP, I just didn't want to read and run. I'll pray for your relative, all might OK, I hope they get to the root of the issue and all will be well x

Diverticulitis? My nan had it for years untreated and sounds similar.

TwinkleLights24 · 22/12/2024 22:08

Could be IBD. Hope all goes well.

This does run in the family. Her mum had it too. I wasn't aware it could cause such extensive bleeding.

I'm pleased she has had medical tests but she put it off for so long and basically had to be forced to go to the hospital. It's all very difficult and I'm just worried sick.

I would imagine if it was anything sinister the results would have been back sooner and an earlier appointment made. I know it's hard not to worry though. Crohns/IBD can cause extensive bleeding if its bad inflammation /flare up.

MagicalNight · 22/12/2024 22:17

Diverticulitis can also cause quite extensive bleeding

MagicalNight · 22/12/2024 22:19

Large polyps is another possibility. Hopefully you will have answers soon x

Coffeemmmmcoffee · 22/12/2024 22:24

Colon cancer
IBD ie chrons/ulcerative colitis
polyps
haemorrhoids
diverticulitis (less likely to be significant blood)
specific more rare haematological or vascular disorder

No one can really tell you OP other than there are many things it could be that aren’t cancer

Im glad your relative now has an appointment. Encourage them to attend and get the info they need to move forwards.

Whatabouthow · 22/12/2024 22:42

Don't rely on the appointment speed or not hearing for a while to tell you anything, keep pushing for answers. Things fall through the net all the time. Wishing her all the best.
