AIBU to ask what the practical implications are of having a criminal record?

I know someone who is in prison for sexual abuse of a child (under 18 rather than under 13, if that matters).

I'm expecting that he will have to sign the sex offenders register and won't be able to work with children/vulnerable adults when released.

What other implications will this have on their lives post-prison? Will it stop him getting a decent/professional job in future?

I hate the thought that he will be able to waltz out of prison and get on with life as normal, when he's left his victim's life in tatters.

It really hampers one’s ability to travel abroad.

And yes chances of a job are slimmer, lots require a background check and im not sure this type of crime is something that would be acceptable in the majority of workplaces.

Plenty of jobs will not be available to them.
Many voluntary opportunities (which require a DBS) will not be an option.

Travel to some countries will not be possible (eg USA will not grant an ESTA, the EU will have a similar system next year, so could be an issue there too).

It may impact things like rental agreements perhaps.

In short, there are plenty of implications/consequences.

IT very much depends what they do for a living. If they’re an IT consultant, they’ll probably be pretty unhindered.

If they are looking for a client facing role, they can probably forget it.

Thank you. I'm not normally one to wish bad things for people, but this case has really got to me.

It depends what they are trying to do

  • probably life long ban on working with under 16
  • needing to report their whereabouts when away from home overnight
  • not allowed to stay in a house with children
  • not allowed in a paid role with regular contact with children

What happens about contact with his own children? He has a 15yo who may want to see him. Are there any blanket rules or would any contact be arranged on case-by-case basis?
