Twiglet macaroni cheese

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/12/2024 17:47

Would I be unreasonable to top a macaroni cheese with crushed up twiglets?

I think it would be delicious but my partner is having none of it.

Do it on your portion only and report back!

Hes just put it in the oven, I don't think he will let me near it but I may sprinkle some on top...

sounds interesting, but I wouldn't possibly spoil his - so only your side and make sure it doesn't spill over onto his.

if you hate it it will be easy enough to scrape off

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/12/2024 17:52

sprinkle some on top when its searved I mean, I'm not going to sneak in and mess with his cooking!

I do that but with crushed up cheese and onion crisps. I then add grated cheese and grill.

Wotsits are also nice if mixed in.

Mymymble · 22/12/2024 17:57

That sounds delicious - I wonder why no-one’s ever made it. Please report back!
Of course some people hate Marmite/Twiglets but I love them.

soupfiend · 22/12/2024 17:58

Ive heard of this with cornflakes too, you would have to really smash them up though

Planesmistakenforstars · 22/12/2024 17:59

I'd never have guessed that my "enough internet for today" moment would be this.

applestewing · 22/12/2024 17:59

I’m very interested in the outcome
please report back

and of course ltb, who doesn’t like twiglets?

ueberlin2030 · 22/12/2024 18:00

🤢🤢🤢🤢

mynameiscalypso · 22/12/2024 18:01

Oh yes, this sounds utterly delightful. You must do it!

Uricon2 · 22/12/2024 18:01

I am loving the suggestions on this thread, especially about the judicious use of Twiglets.

@PoissonOfTheChrist do you mix the Wotsits in with the mac cheese itself?

Uricon2 · 22/12/2024 18:02

Chef tip is to mix a teaspoon (ish) of Marmite in when frying/sauteeing mushrooms. It works because umami, innit?

PoissonOfTheChrist · 22/12/2024 18:03

Yes but I crush them roughly @Uricon2

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/12/2024 18:06

Sounds quite nice OP.

I really don't fancy the soggy mixed in wotsits though!

SiobhanSharpe · 22/12/2024 18:07

Twiglets are very salty, could overpower the flavour of the macaroni cheese. Use with caution, I'd say.

Mymymble · 22/12/2024 18:16

Uricon2
Thanks for the mushroom tip. I mix up a teaspoon of Marmite with a couple tablespoons hot water and add it to chopped kale or cabbage when I’m stir frying it in butter or marge. It goes down a treat with Sunday dinner.
I think over the years I’ve had more compliments for my Sunday greens than any other recipe I’ve cooked.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/12/2024 19:10

So I crushed some up with a rolling pin and sprinkled on my portion, was really nice! would have been either better under the top layer of cheese but I don't think my partner will become a marmite convert any time soon.

Thanks for the report back. I’m definitely going to try it now.

Bjorkdidit · 22/12/2024 19:23

On their own I think they'd be a bit much, but mixed with breadcrumbs I think it would work.

Perhaps introduce gradually, upping the twiglet proportion over time like you would for a toddler.

applestewing · 22/12/2024 19:31

Thanks for reporting back op

Im 100% going to try this

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/12/2024 19:37

I've often wondered about doing this with Wotsits as a "crumb" will have to try it

Cherrysoup · 22/12/2024 19:39

Crushed up crisps is bog standard for us. Twiglets is flipping inspired! I think I’d be using whole ones to scoop up some macaroni cheese, yum!

Wotsit fans might like this www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mac_and_cheesy_81730

It's a step too far for me personally but each to their own

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/12/2024 19:59

I think the marmite really enhanced the flavour of the cheese
