To think noise cancelling ear buds are as good as headphones?

Can you help settle a debate with my partner?

I'm after some noise-cancelling headphones after the-worst-train-journey-in-the-world filled with drunk people.

I prefer ear buds to over-ear headphones because I don't like carrying bulk but my partner says these aren't great for noise cancelling?

I disagree. Granted, my opinion is based on nothing but the fact I prefer ear buds so you know 🤷

Anyway we're getting way too involved over this matter so maybe you can settle it for us 😆

I have AirPods pro 2 and the noise cancelling on those is absolutely marvellous. I don't like headphones.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 22/12/2024 11:36

Do airpods come in different sizes now?

I will go googgle...

Last time I tried them they weren't comfortable, too big so I've been using ear buds with changeable rubber tips

I have some Jabra elite earbuds and they do cancel most noise around me. I realised how much when the battery died and I borrowed DH’s old Apple earphones (the plug in type) for the gym.

broccolienthusiast · 22/12/2024 11:39

I have both and I find the over ear ones are way better

hesitsupallday · 22/12/2024 11:40

Another vote for AirPods Pro 2, it's like being the only person in the room

CraftyNavySeal · 22/12/2024 11:50

I have AirPods Pro they have multiple buds so you can choose the right size, fit perfectly even though I used to hate in ear ones as they wouldn’t stay in.

Over ear ones are probably better at noise cancellation but I hate the feeling of my head being squished so it’s a moot point for me.

I have had three different models of Bose NC over ear head phones and loved them all, apart from the bulk. I didn't believe in ear NC could be as good, till I eventually succumbed to a pair of Apple AirPods Pro twos. I compared them on trains and buses and was amazed that they were actually better than the over ear ones. I'm a convert especially if you replace the tips with comply tips, I find them work much better than the standard ones.

It seems the biggest problem with the in ear, is loosing them, I suggest naming and labelling them with your phone number.

A lot has changed with them. The buds are smart enough to do an in ear tip fit so you get the most out of the noise cancelling. You can change tips too. Also the conversation feature is wonderful as it can now pick up if someone is speaking to you and filter their voice through.

I have a profound hearing loss, and the tech to turn the air pod pro 2 into hearing aids is already in many countries, it will probably come to the uk early next year, but reports say they are better than expensive hearing aids so I’m looking forward to seeing how they compare.

they’re on offer in several places for £179 at the moment as well.

chipsandpeas · 22/12/2024 12:33

i have the airpods 4 which have noise cancelling

Glittertwins · 22/12/2024 12:37

I have the AirPods Pro 2 and the DCs have the over ear version. I think the over ear versions cancels more noise but both make a big difference when near noisy people.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 22/12/2024 21:14

OK well he's saying that because a few of you have mentioned over ear headphones are still better that means he's won but I disagree 😁

Seriously helpful recommendations though and I'm looking into airpod pros!

I use Bose over-ear ones a lot, because I have the world’s tiniest ears and earbuds can cause me pain if I wear them all the time. But I usually use AirPods Pro when I’m out in town, because they’re more convenient. I would say the noise cancelling is similarly good in both. (Incidentally, the smallest ear tips on the AirPods Pro are fine for me, whereas I couldn’t wear the first gen standard AirPods for more than an hour or so without excruciating pain because they were too big for my ears.)

CrunchySnow · 22/12/2024 22:10

I have a pair of both over ear and buds. I think the noise cancelling on the buds is actually marginally better (although both are good). I'd go for these...

Do in ear ones allow noise cancelling without music? DDs over ear Anker Soundcore do although you may not want that feature so it maybe less important.

Yes, you can use noise cancelling without actually playing any sound. I use my AirPod Pro 2, quite often in noisy offices with silence just to reduce the distractions.

CanadianUKimmigrant · 08/08/2025 15:10

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but can the airpods pro2 be used with android?

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 08/08/2025 15:13

I've got Samsung... somethings. They are brilliant at noise cancelling with or without music. They have different size tips too.

ETA: they are Galaxy buds2
