My DD's strange symptoms this week- red eyes and hives

It started last Sunday, I noticed one of her eyes was red. I thought ok.. let the gunk commence..

But no gunk came. Her eye was just a bit red for a couple of days. Then a day or so later, her other eye was red for a few days. No discharge either.

Then it went away completely.

Out of nowhere last night she got hives on her arm.

I gave her some antihistamines and it cleared up.

Todays she seemed fine and I've just noticed her eye is a bit red again. Just a bit bloodshot.

The other thing she suffers from is eczema. She's had some flares this winter and gets it around her eyes sometimes. On her body and a bit around her mouth.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be about ? I'm wondering about her eye redness in particular.

She's nearly 5.

It sounds like standard allergies. Maybe something in the environment? I get red eyes and random hives with my allergies all the time and the fact that an antihistamine seems to have cleared it up would imply that it was some sort of an allergic reaction.

Any pets? Have you been outside to the park/field today. Bubble bath, soap, body cream?

Christmas tree? Some people are allergic to real Christmas trees.

I just have ZERO experience myself with allergies or eczema myself until I had my daughter because I just haven't suffered from this at all.

So what do you think she could be allergic too ? Dust ? She's had hives once before, but that was during the summer.

We have a dog, but we've had the dog since she was born.

We haven't been anywhere unusual. Our Christmas tree is fake.

We did go to Santa's grotto yesterday but the red eyes started before.

Allergies can occur, and often do, after being exposed to the allergen many, many times - even when a reaction has not historically occurred.

I became allergic to my childhood dog. It might not be that, can you keep them apart for a little while and see what happens? I realise that’s easier said than done.

My DD is 4 and suffers with blephuritis, her eyes start off red as you have described and we have been told this is caused by allergies, we find she suffer far worse in the winter months.

DD2 had an allergic reaction recently which started with hives. This was a food allergy.

Hope this helps.

weiddsym · 21/12/2024 21:04

My dog is a yorkie, so not usually the type to cause allergies - but of course it's possible.

I can try to keep them apart a bit more

Look up allergic conjunctivitis. It sounds like it could be that

Sometimes it can be caused by what you eat. Has she had a change in diet eg a bit more junk that usual (standard this time of year! 😀) or more dairy than usual? That can knock gut bacteria off kilter and cause flare ups.
Or environmentally, have you got Christmas candles on the go in the house that could be irritating her?
You can give the antihistamine ‘preventatively’ too - so one a day for a few days to stop things flaring up in the first place.
Advice here from someone with a ton of allergies and years of experimenting to work out what causes it and how to keep it at bay!
