Neighbour's dog.

I live in a flat and my neighbour opposite has a dog that barks a lot. Neighbour, a foul, abusive man has been in hospital for ten days and the dog is on his own.
Someone is coming round once a day to feed him and give him water.

The poor dog is barking and howling constantly, but the RSPCA said if he's got food and water and shelter, he's fine, and the council don't care.
It's driving me mad, what can I do for the poor dog?

I’d call the police and say you’re concerned you haven’t seen your neighbour in a while and his dog is constantly barking…and could they do a welfare check
or try another more local dog charity

noctilucentcloud · 21/12/2024 20:36

Poor dog. The person popping in perhaps doesn't realise the poor dog is so distressed (and it's constant), so maybe leave a note on the door to alert them. But is the person also letting the dog out to toilet? If not, maybe that's another angle for the RSPCA because the flat must be getting disgusting. I don't think any animal charity will be able to help until the RSPCA/police can remove the dog, it wouldn't be legal. Unless there is a local charity that provides care for a pet during a hospital stay and that could be offered to the owner, they'd have to agree though (unless it had reached a threshold where the RSPCA/police could remove the dog). But I'd also keep on at the council, firstly because of the noise (so through one channel) and perhaps also through the dog warden (welfare grounds), and maybe if the dog isn't being let out to toilet then maybe that's an avenue too. If your neighbour has social housing that's another possiblility (eg contacying the housing association) as often you have to sign that any pets will not cause a nuisance, and also the HA/council will not want their property trashed if that dog is toileting in there.

I never thought of leaving a note on the door, I'll do it now.
Thanks

The dog is clearly distressed, push the RSPCA to help or another animal welfare place. It’s not good enough to just ensure water and food etc, they need companionship and to be let out etc. poor dog feel sad for him/her…

The RSPCA don't care, bur I've taped a note to the door telling the person that comes too feed him that the poor dog is really distressed, howling and barking. I'll see what happens.

Tell them you haven't seen the person for a couple of days and the dog sounds like it's losing its voice

Remind them they changed the law so animals don't suffer and this one is clearly suffering

It's his female friend who's feeding the dog and I don't speak to her either, she's vile. Leaving the note on the door is the only way I can let them know.

Maybe remind the police they have a legal obligation to act?

Neighbour's dog.
Theunamedcat · 21/12/2024 21:22

The animal is in clear distress they should be acting

tillytoodles1 · 21/12/2024 23:16

The police will probably say the same as everyone else, he's got food, water' and shelter. He'd gone quiet now so they will read the note tomorrow maybe do something .I bloody hope so..

OK but how do they know? If you tell them you haven't seen her for a few days the dog might be out of food and water?

Or you can listen to the dog keep barking

Stormyweatheroutthere · 22/12/2024 00:21

Ask the police for a welfare check on the human.... They can hear the ddog for themselves then.

applestewing · 22/12/2024 08:59

Any reason you’re ignoring the posts advising you to report the breeding to the council? They are more likely to take action and there are other dog charities aside from the rspca who will also take action

just in case your note doesn’t spur them into action

tillytoodles1 · 22/12/2024 10:12

I'm not telling lies to the police. I've left the note so illvsee what happens next.

Update!
He came home from hospital late afternoon.

Update.
He went back in on Boxing day and said on FB that he'll be there for three weeks and the poor dog is still on his own.
The council said he's going to a rescue or foster care and it was supposed to be today but he's still on his own and howling

That's so sad for the poor dog. I hope someone steps up soon and sorts the situation out for him, as he just can't be left miserable and howling for another three weeks. Please keep us updated if you find out anything further about this horrible situation, and thank you for caring about him 💐
