To be constantly at the dr with baby?

Started off the back of another thread where I’m worried my DS has infected chicken pox. Does anyone else with children feel like they’re constantly at the doctors? DS is only 8 months old and seems to be there every week atm. Since October we’ve had infected nappy rash, tonsillitis, I’ve called twice about the chicken pox (once to get some piriton as he screamed inconsolably for 36 hours and also to check it is actually chicken pox as he has bad eczema too). I’ve also been to two appointments on the advice of the health visitor because he’s very small.

AIBU to have this many appointments or am I a hypochondriac? The doctor always says they’re happy to see him but I feel like they’re probably moaning about me behind my back! Is this just normal when you have a baby?

I voted yabu purely because a lot of these conditions could probably be treated just as effectively by a pharmacist these days. I'm sorry your little one has been poorly since October, it's so hard when they're not well 💐

Always best to be safe then sorry kids can go through all sorts never ignore even if you feel like you are always there. Immune system will get stronger as he grows up.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/12/2024 19:36

Nah, you’ve had a run of bad luck.

The doctor isn’t slagging you off and you’re not a hypochondriac.

You’re trusting your instincts. You’re doing just fine.

My son spent most of the first 2 years of his life in A&E as we were trying to figure out what he was allergic too! Turns it was peas haha.

Whenever I’ve been to a pharmacist they unfortunately wont do anything as he’s under 1. The pharmacist wouldn’t even sell Piriton as it’s not licensed for under 1’s. If I had just bought some I didn’t know which type or what dose to give.

You aren’t there too much if that’s where you need to be seen. No pharmacist is going to be treating infections in infants.

WhateverThen · 21/12/2024 19:42

Nope, I felt like this too! Had barely used the NHS then felt like I was rinsing it dry from the moment I got pregnant.

Just a run of bad luck OP. It gets easier as their immune systems develop, and as they get a bit older so you can manage more conditions without the GP.

And yes, you do have to go to a GP with an under 1, pharmacists, 111 etc won’t help!

TeddyBeans · 21/12/2024 19:44

The more you know! I didn't realise they wouldn't treat under ones. In that case, no, yanbu at all

fredshair · 21/12/2024 19:58

Sounds like you are unlucky. My dcs are 2 and 6 and I almost never went to the GP with mine as babies, just went there for necessary jabs plus the chickenpox one so they've never had it. Everything else was just treated at home, they've never had anything that needed more than Calpol and bed rest.

101Nutella · 21/12/2024 20:57

YANBU AND for those saying about the pharmacist - they want children under 2 seen by a Doctor so mine makes us go back to the GP anyway. At 8 months things can go downhill really suddenly so go to the GP. Tonsillitis needs abx as does infected Eczema. Proper infected nappy rash needs prescribed antifungals. So you’ve done nothing wrong.

if it helps the nurse at our local hospital said it’s been a terrible winter for illness and they are seeing lots of poorly children ho have had multiple illnesses.

Pollypoppy · 21/12/2024 20:58

I’d try visiting a pharmacy for things like chicken pox and nappy rash they can tell you if it’s something that needs to be seen by a doctor.

Falseshamrok · 21/12/2024 21:04

As soon as you take a wee baba into the pharmacy they will send you to the docs.

winter born kids are at the docs loads I’ve always found.

sounds like you’ve got your mum head screwed on the right way and are doing the best for your wee one, so yanbu

Stormyweatheroutthere · 21/12/2024 21:06

Wow is this a bragging thread that you can get so many actual appointments??!!! Chicken pox is awful when they are small. Dd 5 months had spots literally appear before my eyes.... Sat on a plan home from a short trip...
I shoved a blanket over her and hoped for the best!

Theunamedcat · 21/12/2024 21:12

Mine go in stages of not seeing a Dr all year then weeks where we are in with the nurse weekly ds2 is currently on two waiting lists ds1 is under consultant care by phone because they don't have enough appointments all this has happened in the last two months
