I have two options of a job 1 in a school Monday -Friday 8:15-3:15 all half terms and 6 weeks off but I can’t take time off any other time or another job else where mon- thurs 8:30-2:45 every Friday off 5 weeks annual leave to take anytime the pay difference is 200 per month I also have a 4 year old in primary school I’m so torn which job to take what would you do ?

Depends if you have childcare options for the holidays if you do then the 2nd job if not the 1st job

School job, peace of mind for childcare and not beholden to anyone else for childcare.

Thank you I am literally so torn but I think I’m going to take the school job as childcare won’t be an issue apart from the off day here and there which can be covered by other half just means if I ever want a random day off or long weekend I won’t ever be able to take it but 6 weeks holidays won’t need to be covered

Hard to say without knowing where this other job is or which one pays more but the school one will probably have a better pension (LGPS) - superior to any private sector pension you are likely to be put in.

Bjorkdidit · 22/12/2024 19:47

Is there any difference in how interesting the jobs are, pension, other benefits or scope for progression?

What about commute time?

Assuming you have a partner, can they cover some of the pick up/drop offs/holidays if you want the non school job?

How much of the extra £200 pm will you end up spending on holiday childcare?

Ignoring the school job making childcare easier factor, which job do you want?

With the school job, is it at your DC's school, so you can drop off/pick up?

If not, will they be in breakfast/after school club everyday? Or will their other parent be doing drop offs/pick ups?

I've worked in a school 11 years since mine were 7,5&2 and absolutely holidays were great when they were little but DH was able to do the drop offs and I finished early enough to do the pick ups. If you're going to be needing term time wrap around, I'd be tempted by the 2.45 finish and day off a week. That day is invaluable to get stuff done. Also would there be flexibility to change your day off occasionally if there is a nativity play/sports day etc so you could offer to work the Friday instead in return for a different day off that week. That also makes it more attractive than the school job.

This will be a long post apologises i have been absolutely torn so i have a hubby who is the bread winner I’ve recently had a career break until daughter went to school so been offered two jobs 1 is the school receptionist in a high school 10 mins away the other is a receptionist in a account firm 15 mins away my career was law prior to daughter but im not interested in progression my daughter in main priority and majority finance is covered with hubby, £200 a month less with the account receptionist but a lot of flexibility ie I am replacing a lady who has had this job 47 years and are willing to let me drop days off if needed adjust times if needed etc time off can be taken when ever so can the long weekends holidays in term time if I needed a few days here and there but it’s 5 weeks annual leave doesn’t cover all Half terms so childcare would be with split between me and hubby with annual leave friends family and now and again the odd week for summer would be a holiday club the school the plus is every single half term and 6 weeks off they are all the same apart from 1 or 2 inset days it’s 200 a month more but it’s an extra half and hour a day and 5 days rather than 4 and absolutely no time off any other time I am aloud 3 appointments a years so that would be sports day nativity’s parents evening
