Paying £1000 for a backyard bred puppy...

Cartwrightandson · 21/12/2024 12:32

Neighbours have 2 girl dogs who they don't walk and they've had 19 puppies between them. The dogs are bred every heat cycle so they're making nearly 40k a year, they aren't registered breeders and don't declare the income for tax. The money goes on new kitchen, bathroom, wood panelling on walls in social housing, white SUV, decking, caravan, investments ect

And before any goes well how do you know they don't walk them...they leave at 5.30 am and and yet back at 4ish, no walking happens, the dogs poo in their back garden. It's been noted by other neighbours that the dogs aren't walked. They leave the girl dogs on their own regardless whether of not they've recently given birth or about to go into labour. They also used leave their 6 and 10 year old at 5.30 and a neighbour would take them to school at 8.30

Dogs have been barking/yapping through the night..waking us up at 3am. Out in the garden at 4am barking..this has been going on since 2018 charging £350 for jack Russell puppies to £1500 in recent years.

So why are people turning up today to collect a £1000 backyard bred puppy? It's mum had puppies 6 months ago and will be bred yet again in 6 months time. They aren't loved family pets, but cash cows.

But...but...but the breeder is friendly and responsive, the puppies are healthy and dnso cute and they've had their vaccines and the place is clean (they hoover and clean before you arrive).

Absolutely lunacy. Sheer madness, none of the dogs are KC registered and what vet is ok with a girl dog being bred every 6 months, from the age of 6/7 months. In total they've probably sold over 80 puppies since 2018

If you have concerns over animal welfare maybe call RSPCA. If they are bred that often and never go out apart from the garden that’s practically puppy farming isn’t it? If you are annoyed about the tax paying- tell HMRC to investigate?

Whyherewego · 21/12/2024 12:48

Honestly your best bet is to tip off HMRC ! I doubt Rspca will do anything from what I've heard

FortWalton · 21/12/2024 12:48

Time to report to local authority if you believe they don't have a licence and then to HMRC.

Offcom · 21/12/2024 12:48

Have you found any ads for puppies for sale which you know are theirs? It could be useful if you report them to the council for breeding dogs without a licence.

Agree the problem is with us consumers who create a demand… I don’t understand how you can do more than 10 minutes research into getting a dog without stumbling across something about reputable breeders.

RandomMess · 21/12/2024 12:49

So bloody sad.

The puppies can’t be KC can they.

applestewing · 21/12/2024 12:50

You can report them to your local council and should of done this ages ago

OrwellianTimes · 21/12/2024 12:53

Tip off the council and HMRC, and have a long hard think about whether the housing situation is safe for young children. 21 dogs have got to be creating a lot of waste surely?

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/12/2024 12:54

Ultimately people pay £1,000 for backyard bred puppies because the options are that; paying several thousands of pounds for something from a reputable breeder; or rescue centres - which are often incredibly stringent about who they rehome a dog to, are often full of the sorts of dogs nobody really wants as pets, and full of dogs which have been given up because they’re “reactive” (read: aggressive) or not good with children or other pets. And because back in the day, getting a puppy because somebody your friend worked with had a dog which had had puppies or whatever was just how most people got puppies anyway, so it seems the norm.

HeyPrestoVinegar · 21/12/2024 12:56

Did you have a question? What sort of replies do you want to the thread?

This simply isn't true. Most reputable breeders actually charge less for their puppies than BYB and puppy farmers do. However , there are usually long waiting lists, and they don't advertise, so the lazy/thick/impatient will go to a BYB rather than wait, do their research and get a well bred dog.

DaringLion · 21/12/2024 13:07

Those poor dogs being bred every season is fucking horrendous

TiramisuCheesecake · 21/12/2024 13:08

Report to RSCPA and HMRC. And the Council/housing association.

hoarahloux · 21/12/2024 13:13

Contact your council. They're illegal breeders.

Liquorish · 21/12/2024 13:21

God those poor dogs. They can’t be allowed to get away with that. You have to report.

RunningJo · 21/12/2024 13:27

Report them. Call the council, the RSPCA.
Continuously breeding dogs is appalling, even more if they female dogs are so young themselves.

More rules need to be in place to stop shitty people doing it purely to make money.

Anotherparkingthread · 21/12/2024 13:37

They've had 19 puppies at the start of your post then 80 at the end? Yet they are making 40k a year so at 1k each they are having 40 pups a year? For 6 months for 2 years?

Yeah sorry sounds like some attempt at rage bait post. Numbers don't add up at all.

ginasevern · 21/12/2024 13:37

@ComtesseDeSpair

"rescue centres are often full of the sorts of dogs nobody really wants as pets, and full of dogs which have been given up because they’re “reactive” (read: aggressive) or not good with children or other pets."

Please don't perpetrate this notion. Rescue centres are not full of aggressive or difficult dogs. Dogs, and cats, are given up or abandoned for a whole host of reasons. Many of the pedigree dogs bought as puppies in the pandemic (by feckless idiots who thought they were buying a fluffy toy) have now been dumped at rescue centres. Likewise the cost of living crises has seen an unprecendented amount of loving family pets handed into rescue centres. Often people move to rented accommodation where pets aren't allowed and sometimes owners die too. It's heartbreaking. There's a plethora of beautiful dogs and cats wondering how the hell they ended up where they are.

LoftyTealSwan · 21/12/2024 13:38

Just get them stolen by someone

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 21/12/2024 13:41

@Cartwrightandson and you can most certainly inform the hmrc about their unearned income!!! 19 grand extra!!! jeez!!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 21/12/2024 13:46

Agree numbers don’t add up.

report to HMRC. Are they breeding enough to need a license? If so report to the council.

I have met a backyard breeder who really didn’t respect her dogs and I wish I’d reported her (she moved away from our area and not sure if she’s still in the business).

Fireworknight · 21/12/2024 13:50

Report them!

wetotter · 21/12/2024 13:50

It's quite likely that for the frequency and regularity with which they produce puppies for sale that they should be licenced - it could be classed as a business

This will however make very little difference to the life of the poor brood bitches

Dog breeding licensing: statutory guidance for local authorities - GOV.UK

JRTs are hardly ever KC registered (KC only started registering them a couple of years ago, and most people aren't bothered about KC standards for this breed)

Twitwootoo · 21/12/2024 14:02

How do you know they don’t pay tax?

showmethegin · 22/12/2024 12:23

Sounds like a shit situation for the dogs, not nice.

The fact they have wood panelling up in the GASP social housing is really neither here nor there

Growsomeballswoman · 22/12/2024 13:50

Inform the HA
