Belly button piercing

My DD is sixteen next month and wants her belly button pierced. AIBU to say no? I have read she can be sixteen to have it done without parental permission. Then I read it's eighteen. If she's going to get it done I'd rather go with her to a reputable piercers.

Wouldn’t bother me at all and yes - I’d go with her and ensure it was a reputable, hygienic piercing place and ensure she was prepared to do all the necessary aftercare to stop infection.

it’s not a hill I would die on - it’s a removable bit of metal.

I think it's unreasonable to say no at that age, it's her body. I think we should teach our daughters that they have control and choice with their own bodies.

My daughter is 14 (she'll be 15 in March) and got her belly button pierced recently. As others have suggested, go to a reputable (recommended) studio. I had to sign consent, provide photo ID and attend with her (and attend her check up appointments).

I had mine done for my 16th birthday. My parents (well my mum) is quite old fashioned but they agreed. I remember my mum coming in the room with me to have it done. She held my hand whilst I laid on the bed, granted looking the other way.

I remember I was so proud of my piercing and my parents for allowing me to have it done. I remember I showed anyone and everyone and was so happy 😃

I had mine done at 17 and I LOVED it for years! In fact I wish I still had it but I decided at 40+ and with a few (a lot of) extra pounds now that it didn’t look very good anymore. Not that anyone really sees my belly button other than my husband these days! But I loved having it when younger and because of where it is if she changes her mind in later life she can just take it out and no one needs to see it as it’s easily coverable. If she does do it, just make her aware it doesn’t heal as easy as some other parts. Mine needed a lot of after care. So definitely get it done at a reputable piercing place and keep an eye on it that its healing well.

Why would you say no?

mrsnjw · 21/12/2024 09:04

To be fair it's not me saying no it's more dad. He is from a family where it is a bit more frowned upon along with tattoos 🙄

I think I'm going to fight this battle for her and say yes.

I don’t think it’s a big deal. I had mine done at 15. I ended up removing it in my 20s and the hole closed up, it’s basically just a slightly darker pigmented dot now, hardly visible at all.

DreamyB · 21/12/2024 09:20

Say yes! Go with her, make it a fun thing you remember :) I had mine done for about ten years and now i’ve taken it out i just have a small dot where the hole was. I loved having it and now i’d older I really appreciate that my mum let me follow fashions and express myself a bit when i was younger (i remember having purply hair first year of college, horrific but very “cool” at the time… for 17 year olds lol) and we still laugh about it together and the silly tiny dresses I would wear. xx

Why would you say no?

Some people don't find them pretty or attractive, and agreeing to your child making an unnecessary permanent hole in their perfect body for fashion reasons isn't to everyone's taste.

OP, she will probably have it done whether you like it or not. When DC1 was on their way to have a lip piercing I phoned ahead and beg them not to do it. The man I spoke to was brilliant and role me he would refuse to do the piercing, if that's what I really wanted, but then my DC would probably walk down the road and have it done somewhere less sanitary by someone less skilled. He also said that school would probably ask him to remove it, and the hole would close up within a day long story, but a school staff pretended not to notice You can ask your DC not to have it done, and advise them where to go if they're determined, but ultimately you can't stop them.

I got mine done on my 16th birthday. I phoned my mum when I was at school, asked her if I could get it done, she said absolutely not and I told her that now that I'm 16 I can get it done whether you say so or not and went in to town after school and done it. Right little charmer I was, obviously 😂
I took it out when I was 26, decided I was too old for it then

Potatoewithawonkyeye · 21/12/2024 12:15

Did any else here used to have piercing parties? 😂got my belly button done when I was 12 at one!

19lottie82 · 21/12/2024 12:17

I got mine done and 16, I’m 43 now and still love it. Although I don’t flash it about anymore as my stomach is no longer as flat as it was in 1998 😂
