AIBU that this is a bit too much homework for the Christmas holidays

DC1 ( year 6 ) finished school at 12.30 today and has been giving homework for the Christmas holidays

daily reading entries
daily log on to the maths app game thing

then 29 pages of work sheets from comprehension to different maths sheets for example one alone has 60 odd questions.

to be completely and handed in on return to school completed in lunch breaks.

AIBU to think this is a bit much ?

That’s madness!

ds is in year 10, he has some history revision and then some art work he has chosen to bring home to finish before the new term.

Ablondiebutagoody · 20/12/2024 14:01

Sounds like school are panicking about SATs. How did he do in his mocks?

feemcgee · 20/12/2024 14:34

Madness, that's ridiculous. The kids need a break.

ACynicalDad · 20/12/2024 14:39

Remember SATS mainly assess the school not the child, they are panicking and I'd get him to do a bit and let them know he will not be doing any more and that if he is kept in to do it then you will complain.

LoveSandbanks · 20/12/2024 14:40

I’ve handed homework back at the end of term before with the words “this is my time now, we won’t be doing this and if it comes home it will get lost. Yes we’ll watch movies together (screen time, the horror) but well
also play games, have walks, read books (of our own choosing) bake biscuits. I bloody loved the holidays with my kids and they weren’t going to get ruined by homework!

Normandy144 · 20/12/2024 14:44

Sounds like early panicking for Sats. Has everyone been given it or just your son. Pretty certain we didn't get things like this at Christmas but we did over the Easter period and maybe February half term but they were provided as very much optional.

Newuser75 · 20/12/2024 14:50

That crazy!
My year 7 son has no homework at all!

Dishwashersaurous · 20/12/2024 14:50

That's way way too much. The daily reading is fine and shouldn't really be thought of as homework but just normal life.

However, 29 pages of questions is ridiculous.

Maybe one piece of work, 2-3 paged would be fine.

Is this what everyone has got, or perhaps is it because he's struggling?

BendingSpoons · 20/12/2024 14:52

That's crazy. So that's basically 2 pages a day plus reading and maths. Maybe you can take a day off for Christmas day but that's about it! That's a huge amount for them to get through in any holiday, but especially over Christmas when lots of people have quite a few plans.

GreenMarigold · 20/12/2024 14:53

I think that sounds like a lot. My y6 child has no homework set for the holidays.

memyselfi · 20/12/2024 14:55

I'd respectfully decline.
I wouldn't allow the missing of lunch breaks either.

D3vonmaid · 20/12/2024 14:57

My DD in year 11 has been 12 days of maths homework for Christmas. So festive.

sanityisamyth · 20/12/2024 15:00

I'd love it if my DS's school set homework. I'm not worried about DS academically but I still think he could do more! That level of homework seems fine to me.

DrCoconut · 20/12/2024 15:05

Schools are very quick to bang the term time is school time, holidays are for family time drum and I'd remind them of that.

PastaAndProse · 20/12/2024 15:10

That wouldn't be happening in our household. Daily reading, yes. But that's it. Send the worksheets back with a note saying you've advised DC not to complete them.

LottieMary · 20/12/2024 15:17

Way too much
I'd do the reading and either some days onto the maths app or some of the worksheets (maybe just have them out to try on a quiet moment) but not both

Cluelesssanta · 20/12/2024 15:21

My y9 has never been given homework at Christmas, ever.

Onthetubetoday · 20/12/2024 15:22

It sounds like a lot given how you’ve presented it but realistically how long will it take to do 2 worksheets a day? They can be done in the morning before the day even has really started. Will be more use to your DC than sitting in front of tv.

^^ This 100%.

Jingleberryalltheway · 20/12/2024 15:28

That’s a lot.

My yr 4 is encouraged to do regular time table work but that’s literally 2 mins a day. Re learn spellings she got wrong throughout last half term (max 10). They get half termly projects and I would prefer they were given out before the holidays.

Upstartled · 20/12/2024 15:29

It's a bit miserable to set much homework over the Christmas holidays in primary school.

He's not meant to do ALL OF IT. Jezzz we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.

JimHalpertsWife · 20/12/2024 15:40

I'd pop it all in a polly pocket/a4 envelope with a note

"Thanks for providing some optional additional schoolwork for the holidays, however in this case it has gone un-used as we spent the time relaxing and celebrating as a family. I've returned the materials in case you can make use of them in the future"

The volume of work is truly ridiculous.

Natsku · 20/12/2024 15:41

That's ridiculous! My DD has always had a lot of homework, ever since she started school, but one good thing is that they never ever set homework for the holidays (studying for tests yeah but not homework) as that time belongs to the children, not to the school.

Is tv and schoolwork the only two options you can imagine a 10/11yo doing in the holidays?
