Should I be worried about temp of 41 degrees?

My 18 month old has a high temperature. Thermometer keeps changing between 39 and 41. He's had calpol and ibuprofen in the last hour. Should we be worried? Any advice please?

I hope this is some stupid attempt at trolling, if not CALL 111 or take your child to the nearest hospital ASAP.

MissSookieStackhouse · 20/12/2024 01:13

That seems very high. I’d call the NHS 111 line to get their advice. Sponge his forehead with a wet flannel to cool him down.

GreenPaint1 · 20/12/2024 01:13

Ring 111

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/12/2024 01:14

Yep definitely call 111 asap

RippedJeansAndCashmere · 20/12/2024 01:19

41° with calpol and ibuprofen, I would be calling 111 and considering urgent care or children’s A&E.

Based on past experience, a doctor (I’m not a doctor) will probably tell you a temperature is okay, if he is okay. Also based on past experience, sick children get very sick fast and getting him seen helps me feel more confident.

I wish it was me trolling. He's my first child and I don't want to waste the NHS time if this is normal. Thanks for your horrible input.

My advice would be to get off mumsnet and phone 111. That's a very high fever for a baby and you need professional medical advice. Hopefully he's ok but nobody can here can tell you not to worry because we don't know your child or his other symptoms so it's best not waste time posting on here and waiting for replies.

Im relieved you're doing that, it's not a waste of nhs time and I hope it's all ok and you're back home soon.

I was like you, OP. Everyone I ever apologetically spoke to in the hospital always said they are always more than happy to see little ones and they can go south very quickly overnigjt, so always go and noone will mind especially while they are little and they are your first 😊. Hope they can help quickly x

OrwellianTimes · 20/12/2024 01:37

A&E is the right place for you to be.

diyisnotmyforte · 20/12/2024 01:41

I'm glad you're headed to a&e if that's where you think you need to be. Mothers instinct knows best! However babies can get really high temps and I always go by how he or she is. Are they limp/hard to wake, have a rash, not producing wet nappies... any other additional sign you are worried (with a temp that high) it's a&e.

KittenPause · 20/12/2024 01:42

Go to A&E

You are now in charge of your DC well being and life

You're a mama bear now

You will be strong and demand the best for your DC

If you think there is something wrong with your DC medically now and in the future you will make sure all tests are done before you go home

You will know your DC better than anyone so you will fight to make sure they are safe etc

KittenPause · 20/12/2024 01:43

Hopefully in this case it's nothing serious that some medication can't solve

SusanSHelit · 20/12/2024 01:49

41 is a very high temp, especially after paracetamol and ibuprofen and I think a&e is eminently sensible in this case.

I work in acute medicine, we use something called the news2 score to help determine how poorly someone is. A temp of 41 would score 3, which could be a medical emergency (FYI it's usually 3 in one parameter or 5 overall, though we do also use our clinical judgement, it's just a guide really)

Cantbelievethatimafoolagain · 20/12/2024 01:49

Is the calpol/ibuprofen bringing the temp down?

CydonianKnight · 20/12/2024 01:51

Get well soon baby Bumble @Bumbleebeetree

Craftymam · 20/12/2024 02:00

We just had this. 41 does seem to be the temp of this nasty illness going round.

My boy had it (2.5yo). I have panicked more about less temp and for some reason was quite relaxed about it. Whilst very hot he seemed to be coping with it quite well. So I just left it and kept an eye.

Trust your instincts.
