Just watching the documentary about her on Bbc Two.

She was just so so talented and funny

Her comedy was brilliant. I have watched The Royle Family about 500 times and often go back to it on iPlayer. I loved the way Denise would go mental when Beverly Macca was brought up. 😂

Ricky Tomlinson who played her Dad on the show said that every Friday she’d go round the cast and crew of the show and give them a lottery ticket that she’d bought for them.

Was he a drinker too?

Recovering alcoholic. I've read the book where he talks about his marriage. It was horrible. Whether Hooky is reliable or not, I couldn't say. I've been a fan of JD/NO for donkey's years and suspect it's six of one, half a dozen of the other with them all.

HellofromJohnCraven · 20/12/2024 22:53

The documentary was told through the lens of her friendships. It was clear that, aside from her huge gift, she was a cherished and valued friend. I found it moving as it reminds me of my friends and the fact that we are all getting older.

QueenOfHiraeth · 20/12/2024 22:55

I also loved Mrs Merton and the Royle Family. Watching the documentary made me feel quite sad that there isn't anything I enjoy watching like that now, there is a real lack of good comedy (unless I am just too old to appreciate it)

Would also recommend the programme Craig Cash said they both loved and were inspired by called "Three salons at the seaside" which was filmed in hairdressers in Blackpool. It's a real reminder of times gone by.

EachandEveryone · 20/12/2024 22:59

It was a wonderful documentary I cried my eyes out. Those were great times to live in Manchester.

Im a big fan too but all this came out at the same time he was promoting his book so just felt a bit snide of him at the time.

I never looked at her the same after reading this article. It was in several newspapers at the time ....

I think a lot of comedians are very troubled people, she definitely had her demons

Wasn’t she incredible? and quite an interesting person

I genuinely couldn't stand her, she was not funny in the slightest.

Lovewilltearusapartagain · 21/12/2024 00:09

@MintShaker Are you serious?

She said the infamous quote to Debbie McGee and so many times it has been repeated by other TV stars /comics

Feelingsad1987 · 21/12/2024 00:11

She was very talented. Such a shame we couldn't keep her for longer.

soupfiend · 21/12/2024 00:12

I didnt mind Mrs Merton but didnt find the Royle family funny and I didnt warm to her to be honest.

OfMiceandWomen · 21/12/2024 00:13

I watched this documentary last Christmas and it made me cry. She was a very talented woman who was taken too soon.
Craig Cash was a true friend to her.

ThePoshUns · 21/12/2024 01:11

She was so funny, it was a great programme. Such a shame that she died so young.

pinkypank · 21/12/2024 01:14

She was incredible

unmemorableusername · 21/12/2024 01:24

Loved her.

Is this on iplayer?

ChessorBuckaroo · 21/12/2024 02:22

Cannot think of a funnier woman in British comedy.

She was so cutting as Mrs Merton, and as Denise in Royle Family she was hilarious in taking after bone idle Jim. Her and Cash writing the script for Royle Family is quite an achievement.

Yes she had her demons, often drink induced, but what an immense talent.

Royle family was fantastic, the episode where she has a baby and The queen of Sheba were real tearjerkers
Makes me miss my Northern childhood

My DSis had her first DC the week after the baby birth episode and I remember my DF asking DSis “ are you sure you haven’t just had a big wee”. DSis had split up with her DH and was staying with DF for Xmas when she went into labour.

I watched the documentary yesterday and sobbed at the end. When she died her cancer had been kept quiet and there was initial speculation around the cause of her death. I hadn’t realised that the primary cause was bladder cancer.

RamblingAlone · 21/12/2024 02:58

I liked her personally, but I am not sure why other people should have to just because that person died.

I recall my sister once saying that an awful woman who had bullied several women in our neighbourhood (including our mother) couldn't possibly have been a bad person because she eventually 'died of cancer'.

People are people some good, some bad, and all of us die.

BellsandWhistlesGalore · 21/12/2024 08:47

She was stunning and talented. Reminds me of my dad's manchester family who are dying out now.

No one is asking anyone else to like her

Interesting program and undoubtedly talented writer but I believe Peter Hook .
