What is this in this part of the abdomen?

Picture atttached! I know you don’t have xray vision but I have a persistent daily pain in this area for the past 6 weeks. It’s not severe but there on and off throughout the day. Feels a bit like someone poking a stick into it. I should probably see a GP but might have to break in there to see one. Any ideas?

The tail of the pancreas and the spleen are in that area. It could be referred pain from another organ or structure though.

ItGhoul · 19/12/2024 15:13

My guess is that you've got gallstones.

Serendipsocks · 19/12/2024 15:26

Thank you! Anyone know why the spleen would hurt?

Thanks. It really doesn’t “feel” like my stomach (nothing like normal stomach ache, not affected by eating). I think I probably need an ultrasound of that area, which would show if there’s anything obviously not right. I just dread the process of getting a GP appointment and then the process of explaining it all to them etc. I wish there was a way to get an ultrasound without a referral (I know AIBU)

You need to get over your discomfort and see the doctor.

When you do, don't let them fob you off, and don't go in apologising for taking up their important time and minimising what you've been experiencing. Insist on an ultrasound.

Thanks. This is exactly what I do usually.

For me this was a stomach ulcer. Same type of pain the the same area.

GettingStuffed · 19/12/2024 15:44

I used to get gallbladder pain on my left, pain doesn't always present where it is. I still get pain on my left and GP said it wasn't anything serious.

Lots of overlapping organs and structures there - parts of stomach, small bowel, pancreas, spleen, vessels, lymph nodes. Behind these are kidneys, adrenals glands, more vessels and lymph glands.
A hernia doesn’t need to protrude outwards - it can go through holes and defects in structures and be invisible externally, e.g hiatus hernia.

Agree with PPs, can’t say what it is over the internet. Hope it settles soon.

No bulge I can see like a hernia (I’m slim)

A hernia just means something bulging through where it shouldn’t. A hiatus hernia is when a bit of stomach bulges into your chest. It’s all happening inside so no external bulge. It’s an inguinal hernia, intestine bulging out between abdominal muscles, which is visible from the outside

Probably stomach related (this is where your stomach is), think indigestion, acid reflux. Probably nothing serious.
BUT having a pain like that for 6 weeks should be checked out really just to rule out something more serious (like pancreatitis or angina)

olympicsrock · 19/12/2024 17:25

That’s where your stomach and duodenum is . Spleen is tucked under the left lowest ribs towards the back …
The transverse colon is also there , doesn’t tell you what the problem is though.
Go and see your GP.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 19/12/2024 17:28

I've just remembered going to my GP in my early 20s about a similar pain and it was the underwiring in my bra that had escaped and was poking me!

Serendipsocks · 19/12/2024 17:43

Thanks. I didn't realise a hernia didn't always bulge out. It seems there are so many options for what it could be. I can't stand underwired bras so it is definitely not that!

Did you ever find out what it was?

Zanatdy · 16/08/2025 20:30

I have chronic pancreatitis (caused originally by gallstones) and get pain in that area.

hollyolly · 17/08/2025 13:18

Thanks for posting and hope you are not in too much pain
