Christmas Meat delivery with Use By dates before Christmas

AIBU to be annoyed by this?

I had my Christmas meat delivered today from an online butcher which I use now and again. It was selected from their Christmas section and ordered a couple of months ago booking a Christmas delivery slot for today (they don't usually offer slots that far ahead).

The turkey and gammon are dated 26/12 - OK, not a problem and the streaky bacon was dated into January - great! But the chipolatas and the sausage meat that I ordered was delivered today with a use by date of 24th! I have put them in the freezer, but that's rather annoying as, of course, over Christmas freezer space is scarce, plus it's another job to remember to get everything out on time to defrost etc.

Of course, it's a long way from being the end of the world, and it's Christmas and I'm not going to get worked up about it, but AIBU to think that meat sold in the Christmas section and delivered in a Christmas delivery slot shouldn't go out of date before Christmas?

Once defrosted, cook them up, treat the chipolatas etc as normal.

One thing I don't get are supermarkets selling Christmas food dated like today and you can't freeze it as cream etc. Never understood that at all.

It's almost a week until Christmas. Would you normally have meat just in the fridge for that long? I wouldn't

I've bought mince pies with a best before date in November, it's not illegal to eat xmas food before or after the 25th Dec.

Yes, I would if the use by date lasted that long.

Tesco are certainly making the use by dates clear!

they can't make fresh last any longer than it does just because it's Christmas.

lots of people have an early family or friends 'Christmas' get together the weekend before Christmas.

so do you think those things shouldn't be available to them just because fresh food doesn't last any longer than it does??

my only gripe would be if the retailer didn't make use by date clear when ordering.

I don't think many people would collect their Christmas meat order a week before Christmas. Most fresh meat wouldn't last that long in a fridge.

Yes I think it’s just too early for fresh meat to be delivered. Lots will be having Christmas meals this weekend so I’d expect the delivery slots this week to be more geared for them, and then deliveries next week for those having the meat on Christmas day itself.

Trickabrick · 19/12/2024 12:45

I think a use by date of 5 days for fresh meat is pretty normal. If you didn’t want to freeze stuff you should have ordered a later delivery date.

If i bought say a fresh chicken i wouldn't expect the use by date to be a week!
