Mysterious order. Royal Mail

Reindeerdust97 · 19/12/2024 01:09

I received an email from Royal Mail yesterday saying they have my order and it’s due to be delivered on Friday. The order is from ‘The Wonder Company’ never heard of them but checked it out and it’s a real company but I haven’t ordered anything. Even weirder the email is to my email address but has my daughters name on it. I don’t think it’s a scam as it looks to be a genuine Royal Mail email address with a tracking number that takes you to the actual page. My daughter is only 5 so I don’t think she’s made any orders and she wouldn’t have been able to put my card details in on this website for the wonder company. What could have happened!? I’m really confused.

The link also takes me to the genuine Royal Mail website with all the tracking information. It says the order was dispatched on Tuesday

Just wait and see if anything arrives. Have you spoken to your daughter about it?

Floatlikeafeather2 · 19/12/2024 01:13

Is their a possibility a relative or a friend is sending her a Christmas present?

Twonewcats · 19/12/2024 01:15

Whether it's genuine or not, don't be clicking on links in emails if you're not sure!
Open the RM tracking page directly, then copy and paste the tracking nbr from the email.

In any case, I regularly have emails and bank charges for things that don't seem to be connected to the place I bought from. Eg sumup payments for taxi drivers as opposed to the name of the taxi company; or a parent company can have different sellers (the Range now do this).

It sounds more like someone has ordered her a Xmas gift and given your email address for the tracking

RogueFemale · 19/12/2024 01:15

It's either a christmas present, or the company name is a 'partner' of a place you ordered from. I often get delivery notifications like this that I don't recognise.

GingersOwner26 · 19/12/2024 01:17

One thing I can think of is mistaken email address, something along the lines of you being jsmith@... and the order having been placed by someone who has jsmith1@... and they just missed the 1 out at the time, so Royal Mail ended up with your address by mistake?

Another thing I just remembered is a couple of months back I got a message saying my order from "random book company, can't remember the actual name now" was due to be delivered, and I was confused because I wasn't expecting a book delivery at the time. When the parcel turned up, it was gin, which I did remember ordering, but I couldn't understand why the confirmation said the book company. (although I did eventually find out that the random book sender has the same postcode as the gin company).

Actually, possibly the most likely explanation. They probably forgot to give you the heads up to expect it.

MarkingBad · 19/12/2024 01:22

I run an online business and this time of year lots of people order to have it sent to a family member or friend ad forget to mention they are sending it directly to them. The completed order sends a note to Royal Mail and if the buyer has put the recipients email address in on the send to address, they get the notification of tracking number from RM.

I agree with @Twonewcats though in that always open the website and not the links via email for online safety.

GreenCereal · 19/12/2024 01:22

The Wonder Company looks like they sell books for small kids - likely someone has ordered a gift for your daughter.

MarkingBad · 19/12/2024 01:26

I've just looked up business and they don't sell direct to the public.

You could contact them via their website to see if they have sent you something

OK they do provide fulfilment and delivery services so it could be genuine

healthybychristmas · 19/12/2024 01:35

I've had a few spam Royal mail emails. I've also had hundreds from boots.

Look at the email address on a laptop rather than on your phone. I wouldn't click on any links

Reindeerdust97 · 19/12/2024 13:32

Ok thank you for the replies! I don’t think anyone would order actually knows the email address used so I’m still confused!

A friend/relative sending a book to your child seems the most obvious option - though why they'd put your email address in is a bit weird.

It could be they've partnered with another company you've used to buy things for your daughter before and they're sending a free 'gift' to her as a way to try and get you to go back and buy more things from them later.

Don't know if they do it any more, but Gillette used to just send out razors to boys when they turned 16 (obviously to get them to keep buying new blades after) - we had one turn up at our house but no-one was aware of ordering it or how they would have got the name/address/d.o.b etc

wheretoyougonow · 19/12/2024 13:40

I can't believe you clicked on a link especially knowing it was something you were not expecting.

I would assume you've been scammed and need to check everything on the device you clicked the link on. Also go to settings and check that your useage of apps/sign in tally. Be aware that they might ask you now for a small 'delivery' cost as it hasn't been covered by the sender.

Stop clicking on links (even if this does turn out to be genuine this time). I often get these emails/texts - it's very common. The websites they take you to are nearly an exact copy - hard to tell they are fake.

Yep, I can't believe how few people have mentioned clicking on on the link either!

She's five!!!!

BobbyBiscuits · 19/12/2024 19:35

@TempuraCustard she probably 'accidentally' ordered a commercial candyfloss machine and sixteen pallets of ice cream then! 🤣

I have just seen the awful, shaming mistake in my post. In my defence it was 1.13am.

Your let off just this once!

OP has it arroved yet and if so is the mystery solved? I'm another one who thinks it will be a gift for your daughter

ElaborateCushion · 20/12/2024 14:18

I had a notification this morning on my DPD app that a parcel was being delivered to me today from a posh department store. It arrived and was a gift from a client. I have no idea how the gift got linked to my DPD app as the login is a personal login using my home email address and mobile number, neither of which my client has!
