For teachers - how do you teach about what is happening there, and about the two countries, to your year 7 - 10s?

Thank you

This one is simplistic but not bad.

These are dead links.

Thanks Oblomov but i can't open either link for some reason.

@Oblomov24 I couldn't access links but I searched a different way and found the link to the brit enc. Is this a subject you teach? There is nothing in here about the change of government in 2014 from a pro Russian to a pro EU government - is this discouraged from being taught about?

Would you also be teaching this age group about Navalny, that some people think that there are bot factories and manipulation of US politics and that sort of thing?

I am not a teacher, just wondering about what DC is being taught, the teacher has been known to be renegade in the past and I have no idea what is and isn't ok in terms of "official" line teaching

Just had some more info from DC. Videos have been shown of the worst parts of the Maiden riots, and of death and destruction in Mariupol, hospitals etc. I have seen the source and it is aimed at kids 15 and older. I am really confused about why this is being shown to younger kids, what it is trying to achieve. Same with the stuff about Navalny, and also about election fixing (which I thought was now considered false), not sure of why this is being taught?

Any teachers on here who can comment? It might be me being oversensitive, or getting it wrong about ages, so wanting some other perspectives.

Oh sorry about links.

The first one is
Brittanica kids Russia-Ukraine war.

The 2nd is a BBC link
BBC News Ukraine conflict: Simple visual guide to the Russian invasion.

No, I am not a teacher. I am a lover of Russian history, studied it since GCSE and Uni, and been to both Russia and Ukraine many times, so just interested, and would hope it was being taught to our dc in a good way,

Thank you for the input, I studied the subject too, so I can relate to what you say, and DC love history and politics and have a lot of good books which are age appropriate and in the most part neutral

I don't think what was shown was age appropriate, so will be raising that with the head.

Interesting op. Do you know exactly what the school showed the dc?

Jingleberryalltheway · 20/12/2024 19:47

I don’t teach anymore but this is the kind of thing I used to teach.

My first go to for news articles and videos would be newsround. I would teach a basic history, a brief description of what Russia and Ukraine are both saying and then ask for or suggest some questions for discussion. It’s been a while though so I’m a but rusty on lesson planning.

RhaenysRocks · 20/12/2024 19:52

In what context is it being taught? PSHE? Geography? We have children of both nationalities at our school so any comment on it needs to be carefully worded and nuanced. As to showing atrocities etc, as with any similar topic of war / genocide, you use age appropriate images or material and that will vary a lot from Y7-10.

Phineyj · 20/12/2024 20:08

A good source for the older end of the age range is The Conversation (UK version) or The Week. Both give a bit of academic distance, which is surely what is wanted for school.

Newsround for the younger ones.

Teaching standards says not to give personal political views.
