Day without glasses

DILLEYDALLEY · 18/12/2024 09:17

So bloody annoyed with myself. Left my glasses at home for the first time in my life. Sat on the train on way to meeting with no glasses. Thought they were on my head as that's where I put them when I do my makeup. 2 mins into the school run went to put them on and lo and behold, no glasses. Didn't have time to go back as had a train to catch. How do I get through the day without going absolutely insane at all the mildly blurry faces?

Try to accept it. Try not to focus/force yourself to focus, as you might get a bad headache that way. Ask for help: reading out/setting screen to larger text (though you’re posting here so maybe you’ve got the automated screen reader or can still read?).
Shorten your day to the essentials if poss. Record meetings on your phone (buy a charger if you need to).
Been there, it’s shit. Take care crossing roads.

Can you stop and get some cheapo ones from the supermarket/chemist's, just for today?

Then maybe leave those cheap ones at work for emergencies.

I work from home and office is 3 hours away so usually it's not an issue. Sadly I'm nearsighted so OTC won't help. I could cry it's so frustrating! Looking at the train window and the trees are little blurs. Sigh.

Have you ever worn contact lenses?

I once forgot to take mine (contact lenses) to a wedding and I managed to buy some and have them fitted at an optician the morning before the ceremony.

Most opticians have some in stock.

Topseyt123 · 18/12/2024 09:39

I'm afraid I would absolutely have to go home and get them because I can't do anything without my glasses. I wouldn't even be able to read anything.

I'd head back and work from home again today, if you can possibly arrange that.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/12/2024 09:44

You'll be fine, assuming you can still see moving vehicles! Squint and smile through the day, sit at the front if you have to watch a presentation and ask someone to check you're getting on the right train home 🙂

LoafofSellotape · 18/12/2024 09:47

I've done this before,it's awful and makes me feel quite odd. It's not just a case of being a bit blurry. I feel quite sea sick with it.

Rocknrollstar · 18/12/2024 10:43

I would have to go home. We visited a temple in India where you couldn’t wear glasses because the monkeys were trained to steal them. I only lasted ten minutes as I started to feel ‘sea sick’ and had to go back to the car. Whenever I travel I always take a spare pair with me. Are you sure over the counter won’t help? I thought they were for near sight. Would sun glasses help?

KimberleyClark · 18/12/2024 10:49

At least you weren’t driving. Consequences could have been much worse than blurred faces at a meeting.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/12/2024 10:50

I can't read at all without my glasses so, when I did this one day (left them at home), I had to buy a cheap off the peg pair in a chemist shop near work.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 18/12/2024 10:55

This is my (first world) worst fear compounded by the fact that different prescription in each eye means those cheapo readers don't even cut it on an emergency.

Hope your day goes ok OP and as another poster said - keep safe near roads Confused

CluelessAsFuck · 18/12/2024 11:15

Get more than one pair - I have a variety of reading/distance/verifocals. Some cost a couple of quid. Scattered in various bags/home/office

LoafofSellotape · 18/12/2024 14:38

Once you get to varifocal stage it's a lot to have spare pairs.

It's only readers you can buy afaik.

natwalesrug · 18/12/2024 14:41

I would have to Bail out and go home. I cannot actually think clearly without my glasses on !

ThisIsSockward · 18/12/2024 14:49

It's giving me a headache just thinking about it, tbh. I'd also be tempted to just go back home if at all possible. If you can't do that, there aren't many options other than being careful and trying to find tasks at work that don't strain your eyes or make you feel worse.

I try to carry a spare pair (even my old ones with my previous prescription) in my bag, in case they get lost or break. Won't help you this time, but it's a good practice, if you rely heavily on your glasses.

HaddyAbrams · 18/12/2024 14:51

I couldn't manage without mine for a day. The constant squinting and straining to see would cause a migraine! Depends how strong your prescription is though I guess.

DILLEYDALLEY · 18/12/2024 20:44

Made it through the day. Home now and felt like kissing my glasses when I found them!

I only wear glasses for driving or for things like watching subtitled films, or on a course and focusing on a whiteboard etc. The rest of the time I'm quite happy to walk around in mildly blurry world of my own. People look 10 years older when I put them on including myself.

I frequently pull out of my driveway wondering why I can't see properly, start clearing the windscreen then realise I'm not wearing my glasses Grin this is why I have a special pair that never leave the car.

BoldBlueZebra · 18/12/2024 21:05

I’ve got pairs of glasses all over but my prescription is -9 so i can’t function at all without them once I leave the house (I can go around the house without I wouldn’t chop anything or cook but I can avoid furniture) even if it’s an older pair try to get a pair in every bag - for today I would just go home
