…to sell this whiskey online?

A patient of mine very kindly gave me a bottle of whiskey last week as a Christmas gift. I just looked it up online and it sells for £80! I don’t drink whiskey, but I could really use the cash. Does anyone know how I could go about selling the bottle? Obviously might not get retail price, but it seems like the only places to sell online are for rare/old bottles. Any ideas?

You can't. It's against the law to sell alcohol if you don't have a personal alcohol licence or work in a licenced premises. You'd need to sell it at a licenced auction.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 17/12/2024 17:57

Yeah, you can't.

imnotsickbutimnotwell · 17/12/2024 17:58

You can’t even sell it on Facebook marketplace. I had a bottle of patronas tequila and Facebook deleted it.

RhaenysRocks · 17/12/2024 18:00

What is it exactly? Do you know any whisky drinkers who would give you something for it? My favourite was a limited edition and I can't get it now .I'd jump at the chance if someone had a bottle.

Someone sold several bottles of whisky on our local Facebook group page. I think it's because people knew him and that it was genuine and not a dupe. I'd be very wary buying due to the recent deaths involving fake alcohol .

Selling it is not possible without a license. If you know anyone who likes it maybe swap it for something- maybe a gift card for a supermarket.

Also if it's Scot's whisky please omit the "e".

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/12/2024 18:03

What is it? If it’s something like small batch or has a cask number then see if you have a local independent bottle shop who’ll sell it for a commission. If it’s just a fairly standard Glenfiddich / Highland Park / Balvennie available widely, save it and give it to somebody next time there’s an occasion for a really nice birthday or Christmas present.

You don't need a licence to sell whisky to a dealer. I've just done it, using a company called Whisky Buyers.

If it's Scotch Whisky please don't call it Scot's.

We have local Facebook bartering groups where you could swap it for something more useful to you, even just for cupboard staples.

lizzyBennet08 · 17/12/2024 18:38

You can it on one of the many whiskey auction sites. They take a percentage commission but still better than nothing.

Technically speaking it is Scots whisky (without the apostrophe) but non Scottish people do use the term Scotch whisky, I agree.
I am Scottish but I don't like whisky, make of that what you will.

Differentstarts · 17/12/2024 20:28

Can you re gift it so at least you save some money that way

Technically speaking, you're talking shite.
It's Scotch Whisky, and it is a legally-defined, legally-protected term.

I too am Scottish, and used to work... in the whisky industry.

SleepingisanArt · 17/12/2024 21:25

@thecatdidit it's against Facebook rules to sell alcohol on marketplace or in any of the groups. It can be advertised for sale by companies (like the Whisky Exchange or Waitrose) but not the public and those companies pay to place their adverts.

thecatdidit · 17/12/2024 22:07

It wasn't me that sold or bought it, but a neighbour. It was snapped up very quickly so I expect Facebook weren't quite quick enough to remove the post. I didn't even think about it when it was offered for sale, (only that I thought someone got a bargain )
