Hair salons assume you want a fancy blow dry

Is it just me? It used to be that you could book a hair cut and they would dry your hair for you at the end. No drama.

Now there is not even an option on my salon’s website for hair cut. It includes a blow dry which doubles the bloody cost!

I booked in this week and added a note to the booking saying I just want my hair dried, not a fancy blow dry. My hairdresser called me today sounding slightly incredulous and asked several times if I was sure I didn’t want a fancy blow dry?

No I don’t!! And I don’t want the salon to assume I want one!!

is it just me?

Do they actually call it a fancy blow dry?

Just ask for a rough dry and you'll style it yourself when you get home. They just want you to look nice.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/12/2024 21:31

My salon just dries it - or leaves it to air dry if I'm in a rush.

Charging is by time taken, so you can book 15/30/45 minutes, etc.

YouMeandBrie · 16/12/2024 21:31

I really resent paying someone £35 to blow dry my hair just because I need it cut. I live around the corner from my salon, I’d happily leave with wet hair but suppose they need to check the colour etc.

KitsyWitsy · 16/12/2024 21:33

I don’t know what you mean. What is a ‘fancy’ blow dry? Mine just dries mine and then straightens it. Do you want it left wet?

woffley · 16/12/2024 21:38

It used to be called a wet cut. Wash, cut and quick rough dry.
I now get it cut dry. She dampens it to cut but there's no faffing and tongs or straighteners.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 16/12/2024 21:43

Yes. I hate it too!

I want the cut, not a blow dry too at a stupid cost. I don't want it styled, moussed. straightened or whatever. Just cut and rough dried.

It's greasy as hell so will last less than 48 hours. Waste of money.

JaceLancs · 16/12/2024 21:44

I ask for a towel dry and blow off - then put on curling cream myself - ruffle up and leave with damp hair - saves me a fortune and is better for my curls

stargazerlil · 16/12/2024 21:46

Yeah, I hate hairdressers, bought some clippers and currently rocking a 22mm crop.

HeddaGarbled · 16/12/2024 21:47

What’s the difference between a “fancy” blow dry and the hairdresser drying your hair for you at the end?

FionaJT · 16/12/2024 21:51

I go to a fairly big, well established local salon chain & they do a wash & cut. Which usually includes the offer of a quick blast from the hairdryer if it's cold out! I never have a proper blow dry.

HooMoo · 16/12/2024 22:03

My salon does wet cut if you don’t want it dried. Then I think wash, cut and finish if you want the blow dry. It’s not fancy though I don’t think. They just dry it and wrap it around the hairbrush a bit for bounce maybe.

Usually
Rough dry - get the worst of the wet out, might be slightly damp, no styling, more of a blast with the dryer
Nice dry - what it says really! Hair dryer, maybe straighteners, styling

goldencabbage · 16/12/2024 22:05

They often try to curl it to hide the unevenness

With a blow dry, the hair is styled as it's dried. Often they will use the brush and hair dryer together. Just drying is just pointing the hair dryer at your head and blowing. I get 'just a dry', but I pay the same as someone who get a proper blowdry. I just accept it as one of those things.

MsNemo · 16/12/2024 22:09

YANBU! They conveniently "assume" you want many things, or make you believe you need them 😒

I once had a hairdresser act like crazily offended when I said I just wanted a "regular dry". To thid day I still remember with shock his reaction! Creepy guy...

SwedishEdith · 16/12/2024 22:14

God, I love a hairdresser's blow dry. Lasts for about 5 days on my hair and never looks that good again until the next time I get it cut.

TartanMammy · 16/12/2024 22:16

My hairdresser will ask if I want my hair dried straight or with a wave/curl. A 'bouncy blow dry' is £15 extra.

Nikitaspearlearring · 16/12/2024 22:16

I'm with you, OP. I don't want a half-hour blow dry with 'product' because it's flat by the time I get home (fine hair). My hairdresser is happy to just blast it so I don't go out with wet hair. I do think they want to charge you extra for the fancy drying. I want just the cut and to do my own styling at home.

dementedpixie · 16/12/2024 22:18

I don't pay extra for getting my hair dried. It is dried and then she offers straighteners or tongs. I always choose tongs as it takes them minutes whereas it takes me hours

pizzapizzadaddio · 16/12/2024 22:19

You are SO not being unreasonable! The blow dry costs nearly £40 at my place and makes me annoyed every time - it’s a lot of money and you can’t opt out at my place. I especially hate it when they spend longer blow drying it than cutting it.

SwedishEdith · 16/12/2024 22:20

Mine doesn't charge extra for whatever level of blow dry effort I want.

Differentstarts · 16/12/2024 22:21

Yanbu I just get a dry cut now.

FoulSeaOwl · 16/12/2024 22:23

I don't think that is standard. I just get mine cut. No wash and no fancy styling or blow drying. I wash my hair before I go to the salon and I wash it immediately after the cut at home as I hate having loose cut hair fall everywhere. My hair dresser is very flexible though.

Doggymummar · 16/12/2024 22:25

I found a new place £30 cut and blow dry. But you had to pay for coffee, so I went without.

It's usually built into the cost of the cut. At least it is here. I'm in the US. The salons that I typically go to, the blow dry is part of the cut. If you specifically don't want a blow dry then you tell them that you don't want a blow dry and then the price is lowered. But the price that you see on the website is the cut and the blow dry.
