To want my lodgers kids to leave?

I want to say, I love my lodger and hope she rents my room forever.

However, we share a tiny 1 bedroom house and I think inviting her adult kids into the house was ill-advised. She has told me they would be leaving today, but they are still here. They have been here 4 days.

In the time they have been here, they have:

  • Had 1 hour showers in the evening
  • Used all the hot water (30 gallon tank) and then acted shocked that there was no more, demanding an explanation as to why the hot water wasn't working.
  • Got BACK IN the shower AGAIN after the hot water came back on an hour later, like using my entire tank wasn't enough (Bills are included in her rent)
  • Sloshed water ALL over the floor and water has literally leaked into the ceiling below so its dripping through the floorboards.

When I showed her kids the leak and politely asked them to not get water on the floor, there was no apology. When I asked them to take shorter showers, they started to take a shower in the morning and the evening.

I don't know how to manage this, and I really like my lodger. She's very nice and from Portugal and her family are based in Portugal, so I understand that must be hard for her. The property is entirely unsuitable for 4 people to share it and I'm holding in my piss for unacceptable amounts of time and even had to piss in an empty yoghurt container. I don't understand why they didn't just get a hotel, there's a BnB on our road. I'm not a millionaire and energy is extremely, extremely expensive.

She told me they were coming after she booked their flights and she did the same thing when her husband came, but he wasn't any trouble. She said they'd be flying today, I really don't know how much longer I can stand sharing a tiny 1 bed with 3 other people.

I'm in the top bedroom, she's in the living room/kitchen. The rent is substantially reduced due to this setup and I don't cook.

I’m assuming you are in Knightsbridge or something it’s the only way this makes sense.

Literally tell her the contract is for her only and she is not to have guests. They need to stay elsewhere. The kids cannot stay and need to leave tomorrow before 9am.
if not you’ll evict her

also charge her for the extra utilities used already

wizzywig · 15/12/2024 20:26

I absolutely love that you put on a proper floorplan

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/12/2024 20:26

Your house is not suitable for even one lodger.

Cambridge :( Also thats way harsh, I would never threaten to evict her unless she defaulted her payments. She's very nice.

What do you eat if you never cook?

What do you eat if you never cook?

I have a microwave, fridge, washing machine, air fryer in the utility room under the stairs. Mainly spaghetti hoops and M&S chicky chocky speckled eggs.

My head is hurting trying to think how everyone is fitting in to this tiny 1 bed house.1 night is just about doable but 4 days! 😱

LumpyandBumps · 15/12/2024 20:30

I don’t think you would be unreasonable to say no overnight guests at all in future due to the space restrictions.

lover99 · 15/12/2024 20:31

OK so it turns out her flight is just very very late in the evening and they have just left, I was worried she had lied about their departure today. So this is resolved now thankfully.

Like I said, she is a wonderful lodger, I was just feeling a bit claustrophobic sharing this tiny house with 3 others.

Might be a time to lay down some ground rules for future visits.

Where on earth are these adult children sleeping?

Where on earth are these adult children sleeping?

On a foam mattress on the floor and in her bed.

I honestly don't know if this counts, but there are overcrowding laws in the UK that are designed prevent this exact type of set up.

You are charging somebody money to sleep in your kitchen op. The entire set up is ludicrous, I don't even know if I believe this post is genuine. Id have some understanding if it was family growth or an emergency eg housing a relative who was made homeless. But you charge money to let the room out to a stranger. Fuck me the housing market in the UK is a depressing cess pit.

Needmorelego · 15/12/2024 20:33

Ok....but put it IN WRITING on a contract that she has to sign that no overnight guests (apart from the husband as you said that was fine) are allowed.

ExcludedatfiveFML · 15/12/2024 20:34

This is insane. You need to make it very clear that they are not welcome back. They can get a hotel.

Your living set up is mental, but I guess it's your choice.

Dealingwithatrexrightnow · 15/12/2024 20:34

Tell her she has to leave unless she agrees in writing for no overnight guests ever again. She can rent a hotel room.

devilspawn · 15/12/2024 20:35

you shouldn't have replaced the hot water when it ran out, they would have left faster and it would have cost you less.

but honestly your living situation is crazy. I bet you're charging her more for that than my mortgage is on a 3 bed. are you declaring the income? are you paying single person council tax?
