Curious how much debt is normal?

Just being nosey really to see what's the average for other people but how much debt are you in excluding your mortgage? I have just under 4k of debt between DH and I due to student loans but don't have anything else other than the mortgage (we have put paying back our loans first and only saving a little each month instead). How about you?

No debt, no mortgage

YaWeeFurryBastard · 15/12/2024 15:02

These threads always go the same way on mumsnet and you have people absolutely falling over themselves to tell you that they don’t have any debt because they’re really very sensible and would never dream of spending beyond their means.

Perhaps I’m a hypocrite because we also don’t have any debt beside the mortgage, but that’s because we’re pretty high income so can afford what we need. I certainly don’t think this is the norm and most people in our age bracket (30s) have a reasonable amount of debt. It’s bloody hard getting through your 20s/30s without it when you need to buy a home/kids in nursery etc and the constant social media pressure to have/do everything.

1800 on credit card, will be paid of end of the month

Bodeganights · 15/12/2024 15:04

£988 just used my credit card to book tickets and flights and hotel. Will be paid before I go in March.
Recently mortgage free. I did spend my 20s in around 6k of debt permanently. I hated every minute of owing so when I finally had some spare cash I lobbed it off the debt til it was zero. Now the only reason I have and occasionally use the credit card is for the protection you get when buying big ticket items and holidays.

Ayechinnyreckon · 15/12/2024 15:06

Other than mortgage, I've got:

£873 student loan, that'll be paid off in about a year.

£4568 on an interest free credit card

£3000 on my every day credit card because we've just booked a holiday.

£2200 on DHs everyday credit card from buying Christmas presents this month.

Both "everyday" credit cards will be paid off in full on payday, and we've plenty in the bank to pay off the interest free one when it comes up.

I think debt is only bad if you can't service it.

Rosscameasdoody · 15/12/2024 15:06

About £500 on a no interest credit card.

Spirallingdownwards · 15/12/2024 15:06

0 and has always been 0 other than mortgage. Have credit cards that I use for security reasons but pay them off IN FULL (per Martin Lewis). I save for things I want (eg holidays) and also ensure I gave savings behind me for things I need (eg boiler, car repairs etc).

MyDeftDuck · 15/12/2024 15:07

No mortgage - no loans - no debt! I save for the things I want, that's been my logic all my adult life

Tomatojuiceandvodka · 15/12/2024 15:10

God. So much. 201k on mortgage to go.
18k car loan
7600 student loans
5000 credit card (interest free)

I’ll be inheriting about 60k next month when a house sale goes through and I plan to pay it all off (except mortgage obviously)

Scirocco · 15/12/2024 15:11

No debt, currently no mortgage.

RuthW · 15/12/2024 15:12

skippy67 · 15/12/2024 13:07

I've never had any debt outside of my mortgage. No uni debt, never had any loans.
Mortgage paid off a few years ago.

Edited

Same for me

whiskeytangofox · 15/12/2024 15:14

£0 debt and I lost my credit card that I’d had for about 30yrs when John Lewis swapped their bank provider, so I can’t get credit either.

If I can’t afford something, I go without now. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Didimum · 15/12/2024 15:16

£1500 on credit card. Paid off student loans a few years ago. Giant mortgage though – about £650k.

updownleftrightstart · 15/12/2024 15:17

I have zero debt, not even a mortgage

MrsAvocet · 15/12/2024 15:17

None. I have never had a loan of any kind other than the mortgage which is paid off and I don't have a credit card. I'm old enough to not have had a student loan fortunately.

ItWasntMyFault · 15/12/2024 15:20

Zero and I've cleared my mortgage but I am in my mid 50s.

Stressedoutforever · 15/12/2024 15:22

I have 70k student loan
Dh has 50k
Don't really count that as debt

2000 boiler finance as it was 0% interest

Currently both cars paid off

200 on my credit card to be cleared at pay day

We have 15k savings so could clear it all just chose not to for cash flow

335k mortgage with 120k equity

ETA dh is 30 I'm 27

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 15/12/2024 15:22

No debt, mortgage or otherwise

laughs4854 · 15/12/2024 15:23

About 15k student loan, about £35k mortgage which we have enough savings to pay off but would incur too high a penalty to bother. Will never pay off student loans so just counting down until it's cancelled. (When I'm 65!)

user87349287657 · 15/12/2024 15:26

Late 40’s early 50’s. 9mths left on what was a massive mortgage.
Pay everything on credit card but paid off in full every month.
Have bought cars on finance in the past but only when the credit deals were very attractive.
Wouldn’t consider debt for anything like a holiday or similar.

UpTheMagicChristmasTree · 15/12/2024 15:27

None except student loan and mortgage. No idea how much the student loan is as it doesn't make any difference to me.

Hesma · 15/12/2024 15:29

Nothing here

Lemonadeand · 15/12/2024 15:30

Plastictrees · 15/12/2024 13:18

Student loans and mortgage, I’m in my mid 30’s for context.

Exactly the same here.

RaraRachael · 15/12/2024 15:30

None. Went to uni before student loans were a thing. I have a credit card that I rarely use and is paid off in full each month.
I own everything in my house and car was bought outright.

DazedAndConfused321 · 15/12/2024 15:30

Planned debt e.g. car loan, student loans etc are wildly different to unpaid credit cards or emergency loans.

I have no debt, I've only ever had mortgages as debt.
