Leaving kids alone overnight

AIBU to tell my 15 year old DS that he has to go to my mothers whilst we go to a party in town and stay overnight? He thinks he should be allowed to stay at home.

15 is old enough to stay at home alone. I started full-time work when I was 15 and went to Spain for a holiday with friends!

Depends how sensible he is as an individual I think. Is he likely to invite mates over without permission?

geekone · 15/12/2024 11:33

I think it depends on the maturity of your teenager.

My teen DS has stayed alone overnight but not while we are out, while we have been working and while my DH can get back home in 20 minutes. However it was a situation we couldn’t get sitters and neither of us could get out of work

he did well, waked the dog and got to school. As he gets older I might get more hesitant as his friends start having “gaffs”.

boundaries are good so dying in the hill of sending him to his grandparents is a good boundary. Keeping in mind at 16 it will be less easy.

It really depends on your DS. Mine would still be sitting at his computer when we got home the next day! But if yours might invite friends over for an alcohol fuelled party, then no, don't leave him.

This isn't a question for the internet as no-one here knows your son or how sensible/mature/trustworthy he is 🤷‍♂️

But 15 is just a number and you're not the OP's son.

Mine were 16 before I left them overnight alone

Thanks all. He's not sensible per we, but pretty capable and would just sit on his Xbox and reheat something in the microwave or air fryer just fine. We're quite rural so boozy teenager party pretty unlikely. Just wanted to gauge others thoughts. My DD13 really wants to go to her grandmothers so we're dropping off there anyway. Just wondered what age other people made the overnight on own leap.

Can the grandparent not come to stay at yours, for the younger child of course but that also covers the 15yo

I would assume the vast majority of 15 year olds could be left home alone for a single night. My parents went on holiday to Dubai for a week when I was 14! If you think about it, plenty of 15/16 year olds babysit for other children at night, and many young people effectively move out at 17/18 years old to go to university.
