Just wanting some inspo really. Any constructive criticism would be appreciated.

I will be doing:

appetisers (husband does these)
brie and cranberry bites
smoked salmon and fake caviar blinis
pear and melon or a chicken caeser salad skewer

main
Chicken ballotine (basically a roulade with stuffing)
brussel sprouts with bacon bits
honey roasted rainbow carrots
roast potaoes
roast parsnips
cabbage
pigs in blanket
gravy

pudding
homemade Yule log
Christmas pudding (bought)
Panne cotta (teen son will make)

posh coffee and homemade minced pies in the evening

I would do a cheeseboard but I’d rather serve it on Boxing Day with leftovers as in my experience my lot don’t eat it.

Cauliflower cheese
red cabbage (instead of cabbage)
Cranberry sauce
bread sauce

i personally would have another flavour stuffing, cooked separately, just in case the stuffing in the bird is a bit soft. We like a bit of crunch here.

All sounds lovely though. What time should I be there?

Nigella's Gingerbread Stuffing is just perfect for Christmas dinner.

ShadesmarBead · 14/12/2024 16:47

I wouldn’t want a Yorkshire pud with chicken. I’m in the Yorkies with beef only camp.

Quite!

Craftysue · 14/12/2024 16:48

We always have red cabbage at Christmas but your menu looks great and it's lovely everyone is mucking in.

peppeRomia · 14/12/2024 16:52

It sounds lovely as it is.

Cauliflower cheese doesn't belong with gravy so I wouldn't go along with that suggestion.

I am shooketh by the number of people who have Yorkshire pudding with their Christmas dinner.

Yorkshire puddings with beef only.

(And I speak as a Yorkshire woman, so am obviously an expert on such things).

I speak as a Yorkshire woman too and say only daft southerners think it’s only for beef. 😉Yorkshire puddings go with any kind of roast (which is what a Christmas lunch is). Were you not made to eat them with everything as a child, even stew?

Siskonot · 14/12/2024 16:55

sounds lovely. but what on earth is 'posh coffee'??

whiskeytangofox · 14/12/2024 16:55

Yorkies go with everything, even a vegetarian main. <gavel> 🧑🏻‍⚖️

I ALWAYS have yorkies with my Sunday dinner. (And add mint sauce to any type of gravy too)

Doggymummar · 14/12/2024 16:56

Deffo need BREAD SAUCE Yorkshire puddings in our house

Liqueur I'm guessing

ghostyslovesheets · 14/12/2024 17:00

We have chicken and beef - so yes we have yorkies but honestly they go with any roast

BunnyLake · 14/12/2024 17:01

I accidentally put you are BU. It sounds very nice and all hands will be on deck which is great.

OneBadKitty · 14/12/2024 17:03

Sound delicious!

ShowOfHands · 14/12/2024 17:03

I do a beef joint as well as turkey (and ham!) so feel justified in doing Yorkshire puddings, but I'd do them without the beef tbh. I'd be disappointed if there were no Yorkies on Christmas Day.

My menu is similar to yours. I also do bread sauce, another stuffing, braised red cabbage, either leeks or cauliflower in cheese sauce and a small vegetarian main. I make cranberry sauce too. I usually do another veg option as well.

I aim to have enough choice that everybody is happy and enough leftovers for bubble and squeak, a pie, maybe curry and some cold cuts and sandwiches. I eat leftovers for the whole of Christmas week.

Andoutcomethewolves · 14/12/2024 17:04

Starters sound delicious. For the main I'd have to add Yorkshire puddings (I'm not a 'Yorkies only with beef' purist and have them with any meat!) and cauliflower cheese for my personal perfect roast. Otherwise it sounds lovely!

Will there be fresh fruit with (or on) the pannacotta? I'd have strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and that would be the ideal pudding for me (don't like dried fruit so wouldn't eat Christmas pud, and while I love all things chocolate I'm not sure I could handle a really rich pudding like yule log after a full roast! I'd probably have some later when everyone else has mince pies though 🤣).

Why not? What about Yorkshire pudding and sausages, would you not ever have toad in the hole?

I grew up thinking they only went with beef (or sausages) but changed my mind when I realised they go with just about anything that has gravy on the plate.

2025willbemytime · 14/12/2024 17:05

Yorkshires with any meat is fine in my house as my dc love them. The offensive thing is people insisting on calling them Yorkies. It's not cute or clever.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/12/2024 17:06

Bread sauce Yorkshire’s and mash are missing.

To me it seems too much and a bit complex.

ForPearlViper · 14/12/2024 17:08

peppeRomia · 14/12/2024 16:52

Cauliflower cheese doesn't belong with gravy so I wouldn't go along with that suggestion.

Finally, someone else who thinks this. Cheese sauce and gravy do not belong on the same plate. I'm all for live and let live but this is a step too far.

NeedToChangeName · 14/12/2024 17:09

I wouldn't have chicken for canape and main course

And of course you need Yorhshure puddings

Otherwise sounds great

Pippa12 · 14/12/2024 17:09

Northerners here- mash, yorkies and pig in blankets an absolute must! There’d be nothing short of a riot for sure!

Sounds lovely tho- lucky guests! Hope it goes well for you!

Thisisnotmyid · 14/12/2024 17:09

I’m quite shocked too actually at people suggesting a Yorkshire pudding with Christmas dinner but I’m Scottish so maybe it’s a Yorkshire thing??

LaPalmaLlama · 14/12/2024 17:10

Thing is, OP, you know your audience and we don't so I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think is needed - e.g. some people will say mash is mandatory whereas we are a family of mash haterz so no mash here! We would have Yorkshires though. Personally I keep the sides to a lowish number as unless you have a lot of ovens or a heated buffet thing, the more things you do, the harder it is to get the timing right and keep it all hot and I really hate luke warm food more than I hate anything specific being omitted.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/12/2024 17:10

peppeRomia · 14/12/2024 16:52

That's an outrageous slur on the kind of the vegetables. Cauli cheese goes with EVERYTHING!

SaagAloopa · 14/12/2024 17:11

How many people are you serving? That sounds like loads to me but I'm only serving 5
