How to make DD’s poo more solid? At my wits end!

Dd is 2.5. She’s had phases of solid poos but the last few months it’s been lose but not enough to mean diarrhoea. GP unconcerned. The problem is it’s often leaking and I’m dreading potty training. I don’t understand why it’s like this? Her diet is more veg than fruit and she has yogurt and sometimes meat and I would say a varied and healthy amount. I do encourage a lot of drinking so I wonder if it’s that but I don’t want to withhold fluids obviously. Any ideas please?!

More fibre to bind it, add banana to the mix
However it could be that she's actually constipated and what comes out is actually leakage around the mass. If that's the case you need GP involvement. Look a the ERaiC website for more information.

She may need more fibre, weetabix, carrots, peas, broccoli, bananas, pears are good, wholemeal bread or 50/50 if she doesn’t like wholemeal, also wholemeal pasta.

We used to pray to the God of solid poos.
DD had an allergy so we had to switch to soya milk ( which she hated but that's a whole other story). Her older step DB was the same. Both still don't have cows milk.
Agree with other posters tho.

That NHS link says less fibre?!

My DS (2.5) is like this, not as bad as nappies mostly contain it now but certainly when he was younger it was bad. I had dreams of taking him everywhere in the sling as a baby but couldn't risk it as every dirty nappy was a disaster Sad

GP, health visitor and nursery all say it's unusual but not unheard of and don't seem to be worried for now

Thanks, I’ve included banana and tried that tactic too. Nothing seems to work! I definitely don’t think she’s constipated and I’ve taken her to the GP a few times but always said it’s no issue. Just really frustrating as it needs changing that second or it leaks, there’s no couple of minutes spare to get her to stop playing etc and it makes things really stressful

My toddlers is like this, has been since they were a baby. Health visitor said not toddler diarrhea as always like it. They refuse almost all veg and meat which doesn't help! No obvious signs of allergies.
But in regards to pottry training they were fine. Have to use wet wipes to clean their bum but all OK. They potty trained at 28 months.

In my child's case it turned out to be lactose intolerance.

Yes because OP's DD obviously isn't having any difficulties going for a poo

ChestnutsOnTheFire · 14/12/2024 08:18

Could it be gluten or lactose intolerance ?

TuesdaysAreBest · 14/12/2024 08:22

We were told to make sure there’s enough fat in the diet, no low fat versions of foods. Dc grew out if it.

So my 2.5 year old twins have never really had solid poos. I'm also dreading potty training but trying over christmas! (Really not looking forward to it)

I saw the GP when they were about 15 months as we were having over 10 loose nappies a day. They had already been diagnosed with cmpa. GP said it was toddler diarrhoea and referred back to dietician. Advice was to decrease fruits high in fructose, increase healthy fats (although this is difficult my girls being dairy free) and cut down on fibre. This did improve things a little (reduced nappies to around 6 per day).

But last month one of them has now had a positive blood test and stool sample for coeliac.

Is there any other way to diagnose than a b test?

I have the same issue with one of my children and was similarly told is isn't toddler diarrhea if it is permanently happening which it always had. I delayed potty training until 3.5 because of it and then he was fully trained in a week.

No for coeliac you need a blood test. They measure the autoimmune response to glueten. But the twin they have tested was only tested as she has other symptoms too (i.e. has a low grade fever most of the time). If the blpod test is positive they refer to paeds for further investigation (a biopsy) which she has an appointment in March with paeds.

The GP has agreed to test her identical twin as she has "toddler diahorreha" too. And due to the genetic link agreed it was reasonable to test her too
