To use a ten year old hot water bottle?

Are you all seriously replacing them every two years like the advice says? I honestly couldn’t send one to landfill that often.
I might be pushing it with the one I used tonight that’s marked 2014 - but I don’t use it that often.

i keep mine at the bottom of my bed so am not too worried.

inkblink · 13/12/2024 05:46

I had a nasty scarring scald on my ankle from one earlier this year. The bottle was only about 3 years old - I'm going to change it annually from now on.

Zimniy · 13/12/2024 05:55

I didn't use to change them but now I do as one burst down DD's back. We were lucky to avoid major burns. Be careful with hot water bottles

WombatStewForTea · 13/12/2024 06:43

I wouldn't. I had one burst and burn my thighs and feet

islamann · 13/12/2024 06:55

As a nurse who works in Burns and Plastics, please don't. I've seen horrific burns in both kids and adults. Use a heat pad instead. If you must use a HWB, only use if less than 2 years old and with a cover, and never fill from a tap. This is aimed at kids but adults should watch too.

WillowTit · 13/12/2024 07:28

why never fill from the tap @islamann

HPandthelastwish · 13/12/2024 07:35

@Florol well I don't use one, I've got two cats that do a good job if warming the bed for me.

But as OP doesn't want to buy a new one, it's a cheap solution that would work until she's ready too and should there be a spillage keep her relatively safe and dry

ClementinePancakes · 13/12/2024 08:03

Mine is pretty old.
I don’t honestly think I put water hot enough to scald in it though.

CrackersAndMarmite · 13/12/2024 08:04

If you've got a 10yr old bottle that still works, keep using it!!! They r made terribly these days and all my 'new' ones have leaked within a year or two. My old one lasted about 15 years before it died!!

The80sThe80s · 13/12/2024 08:32

I watched a friend fill one and she didn’t squeeze the air out. She’d never been shown!

Isometimeswonder · 13/12/2024 09:08

Get a Hottie. Gel filled that you warm in microwave.
I hate the smell of wheat ones

VacuumPacked · 13/12/2024 09:16

do hwb still have a Kite mark ?

Oreosareawful · 13/12/2024 09:20

I realised the other day that mine is four years old. I won't be using it again. It's not worth the risk x

SuperfluousHen · 13/12/2024 09:23

It’s all fine and dandy…until it isn’t.
Personally I wouldn’t risk a scalding or soaking my bed.
But you do you.

Notmoog · 13/12/2024 09:26

SurelySmartie · 13/12/2024 01:46

This never used to happen 30 or 40 years ago they must be using poorer quality rubber these days.

My husband had one burst on him over 40 years ago.
I never knew it was a risk until he told me about it.
He won't have hot water bottles in the house at all

RegulatorsMountUp · 13/12/2024 09:28

I will never understand why anyone uses a hot water bottle. They're so dangerous and unnecessary.

FelixtheAardvark · 13/12/2024 09:44

Ours is 20+ years old inherited from my DM!

So long as the rubber hasn't perished why change it?

Even if it bursts will a bit of hot water (never fill it with boiling water remember) do that much damage to you or your bedding?

Brombat · 13/12/2024 09:47

Just taking my DM a new one, as noticed hers was quite old.

I use HW bottles a lot, tge rubber can get thin, especially around the neck.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 13/12/2024 09:49

I've had the same hot water bottle for 27 years!
It did get passed down to my daughter earlier in the year, so I've popped a new one in the cover to be safe.

LouH1981 · 13/12/2024 10:47

I’ve just googled the cost of a replacement and they are literally £3.25 in Asda. Definitely worth doing to avoid all these terrible burns 😞

islamann · 13/12/2024 11:36

WillowTit · 13/12/2024 07:28

why never fill from the tap @islamann

It explains in the YouTube clip, but basically bugs in the tap water cause it rot from the inside. Those bugs are killed by boiling the water.

museumum · 13/12/2024 12:49

Sigh. I don't want to throw them away every two years, sooo wasteful regardless of the price but it seems like they're not fit for purpose. Somebody really should invent one that can last better.
I'm eying up stoov cushions - are they really going to be worth £100.

Doggymummar · 13/12/2024 12:52

I wouldn't, mine perished a few years ago and I have a scar on my tummy from the burn. I'm one of those that fill from the kettle. Not the hot tap.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/12/2024 13:03

I had one burst all over my back and butt checks, it didn't leak it pretty much exploded and not long after I had filled it up as well (all air was removed!).

Once I got back from the hospital I had a look and it burst right along the edging, and turned out to be 5 or 6 years old (used regularly).

I checked all my other ones and threw away out of date ones.

After the pain of the burn I would never use a out of date one again. Peeling the clothes off my back while the skin came away was horrible (automatic reaction to remove the hotness/clothes) and then getting it cleaned and patched up at hospital was extremely nippy. Took quite some time to heal and I have a scar now that looks like a massive birth mark.

MimiMe24 · 13/12/2024 13:04

My old one perished just last week-as well as wrecking the sofa it scalded my back pretty bad (which has now gone all scabby. Lovely)

Don’t do a me and definitely change it!!! (I had no idea it has perished to that extreme)
