17wk gender scan query

OneRoseDuck · 12/12/2024 13:13

Hi, looking for opinions please.
we went for a gender scan last week at 17 +3 and were told boy, but I have seen a lot of threads online about boys being mistaken before 18wks for their cord or swelling. What are people’s thoughts please, is baby definitely a boy?
I am carrying the exact same as my first girl, have all the old wives tale symptoms for a girl and my gut instinct was a girl so was shocked to hear ‘boy’
(please be kind looking for opinions not rudeness)
thank you! Xx

I don't think anyone can be sure from a picture. You should be due your NHS 20 week scan soon so you can ask them the sex and don't tell them you already know so they will look and tell you then if they both say boy I would be quite sure it is a boy. Thats what i did when i found out the sex of my twins then I asked a 3rd time at the hospital as well (had lots of scans as it was twins) Mistakes do happen but not that often I don't think.

Does it matter if it’s a boy?

I'm guessing she wants to be sure before she starts buying blue stuff. As yes it would matter to most people if they bought a lot of boys clothes and accessories and spent a lot of money for it then to be born a girl

Eh? Goodness knows how those of us who never found out coped!

Thank you! Yes I was going to ask at 20week scan also, but will definitely not mention that we’ve been told a boy and see what they say! It’s just nice to know for ‘sure’ isn’t it to get prepared! Xx

Looks just like my boy, if you look you can see the 'balls' (white spots). It's not a penis you're generally seeing it's the scrotum I think.

Of course it doesn’t matter, I’m blessed with either. Just asking opinions on the scan before I think about buying clothes, decorating the nursery or telling my daughter and family.

Eh, luckily for me I don’t need to know that!

Perhaps wait a few more months for a surprise? If you already have an older child you wouldn’t need to do any shopping this time?

WalterdelaMare · 12/12/2024 21:32

Do people still decorate and buy according to sex? I though those days were long gone.

Anyway, I am so rubbish at deciphering scan pics, I can’t even see which bit is the baby 😂

congratulations on your impending baby!

It's a scan for sex, not gender.
And you can paint in whatever colours you like and buy clothes and etc in any colour you like and don't have to buy into tedious and restricting sex stereotyypes?

OneRoseDuck · 12/12/2024 21:35

I appreciate that, but that is something I will be choosing too do. I will also be choosing to tell my daughter if her sibling is a brother or sister

Mann people like to dress their child traditionally though, what does it matter?

Dressing babies in blue or pink is a new thing. Traditionally babies would have been neutral as no one would have known what they were having and it would be too expensive to have gendered clothing for babies that might not be passed down to siblings.

vibratosprigato · 12/12/2024 22:06

That very much looks like a boy scan to me!

McGregor33 · 12/12/2024 22:42

My girls scan looked like this, I was told boy. Bought boy stuff and found out at multiple other scans she was all girl. Albeit, she was very swollen when born so I always wonder if that’s why we were initially told she was a he 😂

Same with my friend with her 4th. The anticipated Baby Hugh ended up being Baby Rose.

it matters greatly. there are plenty of studies to show how and why

I keep seeing posts about this happening to people which is what started me questioning. With my first we had numerous early scans so she was confirmed a few times as a girl, so will be good to hear what they say at 20wk scan! X

I had a private scan at 17 weeks, he was clearly a boy and he was born a boy (I didn't have any NHS scans out of choice) but I must say my scan pic was clearer than this. It was very obvious to me and I didn't have my glasses on! 😆
