Secret Santa CF's

If your group of friends do a Secret Santa, is there always one person who spends the bare minimum rather than the budget you've all agreed in advance?

Every year there is always one awful present and it's happened again this year. The budget is £10 and someone has bought a large bag of crisps!

We always give the option that anyone can withdraw from being part of it if they want, but they never do! None of us are struggling financially!

I'd be interested to hear of other CF Secret Santa presents!

Dh received someone’s self-published children’s book… it was truly awful, so awful it wasn’t even funny

I got someone's self published poetry once.

It was excruciatingly awful!

She made me read a poem out to the group and I could barely get through it.

How can people bear to do that? I wouldn't even if I had a traditionally published book of my own to give.

BashfulClam · 12/12/2024 19:14

I take a lot of care in my gifts. I like to get the person something that suits them but after duff gifts I just stopped participating.

One year I got a two part Secret Santa gift comprising a vegetable steamer and a pink feather boa.

I'm trying to put the two together in a sex-related context.

I was once given box of chocolate willies and a whip. I wouldn't have minded but the chocolate was really cheap and the whip was well used and broken. I suspect the giver was the office arrogant AH who thought he was something special (and didn't like a woman in a higher grade than him).

My reaction: I laughed a lot when I saw them and offered everyone a chocolate!

At work we had a £15 pound limit. You can choose to opt in/out, no pressure. I got a half eaten bag of cookies last year. It was store bought and you could see that it has been opened and tied back together.

housethatbuiltme · 12/12/2024 19:30

I mean to be fair a 'budget' doesn't mean you must spend exactly that amount, it mostly means don't really go over this.

So someone moaning they got something £5 on a £10 budget is somewhat cheeky in themselves... the 'it only cost x in y', really I have never searched the price of a gift to check it was monetarily enough.

That said fully agree the worst thing about secret santa is theres always 1 or 2 people who blatantly put in no effort... its not money (I would be happy with a pound land item if it clearly had me in mind) its the lack of any care/effort that hurts.

Hermie12 · 12/12/2024 19:30

Former MD in a previous job was vegan and very vocal about it . Someone bought him a box of veg. He was not impressed.

Coconuthotchocolate · 12/12/2024 19:33

£5. Last time work did a secret Santa I ended up with a packet of blue ribands and a can of cocktail from the Tesco express along the road from the office. I had bought a thoughtful present for my person. Never again I swore and I point blank refused to engage this year.

Anjo2011 · 12/12/2024 19:34

Is it possible there was some cash attached to the bag or some scratch cards? Just a thought. But if not, massive CF.

SnowLeopard5 · 12/12/2024 19:35

Work secret Santa some years ago and I got a used baking recipe book (inside pages dirty and torn) with a wooden spoon!

Got it.

Pink = I'm a woman ('cos I said so) , so you must be a Lesbian.

I have questions...

Who is the chief of the Secret Santa and how does the group decide who gets who? Do you pick a name from a hat? Is The Chief aware of the pairings? Because they need to stage an intervention.

Springisintheairohyeah · 12/12/2024 19:38

I'm a keen cook. I got a jiff lemon.

Timble · 12/12/2024 19:41

Not so much CF as just not much effort but I worked in a primary school for three years and every one of those three years I received lip balms. I mean at least try! Unless they were all thinking what dry lips I have 😂 (I don’t)

Secret Santas where a CF couple put in one present but take out two - leaving another person short 😕

How? One of them didn’t pick a name?

MamaLazerou · 12/12/2024 19:42

My worst was not receiving one in a small work group on Christmas Day - those of us working had decided it would be a good way to celebrate even though we had to work.

It was obvious who had given what and she openly apologised she had been so busy and unable to get me anything but would get me something soon. She never did… another colleague heard about it and raised it with her later on - she denied it and said she had got me a gift!

I feel like the worst bit was that she was given a supermarket voucher for the full amount. In that situation if I had truly been too busy to get someone a gift or forgotten I would have just passed the voucher straight over. It would have sorted the problem there and then but no…

She did several other things over the years that made me question her values…

What’s the point of secret Santa and doing a wish list. Why don’t you all just agree to spend £20 on yourselves?

You're some craic!

SunnyHappyPeople · 12/12/2024 19:44

ObsidianTree · 12/12/2024 19:04

Whoever set up the secret Santa will know who bought the crisps. Next year, they need to make sure they get them and give them something shit like Brussel sprouts

Hey, brussel sprouts aren't shit!! I'd be over the moon with that!

ChipsnGraveee · 12/12/2024 19:45

Work secret Santa - someone bought my (young 20 something very sensible) colleague a home breathalyser kit. She didn’t even drive.

CactusSammy · 12/12/2024 19:48

A toilet roll with christmas jokes printed on it, so disappointing as I had made such an effort to get something my recipient would really love.

I never signed up for the office secret santa again!
