AIBU to he concerned about DS temp

My DS started with a fever of 38.5 Sunday that rose during the night, he also had a slight cough. I took him the GP who said he had slighty swollen glands and a bit of a red / swollen throat (she said definitely not tonsillitis) she's given him 5 days of antibiotics in case he had half a day yesterday and a full day's worth today. Last night he woke up about 4 am shivering . I'm worried the temp doesn't seem to be going anywhere and we are now on day 5. I checked before bed and it was 38.5 .
AIBU to be concerned?

How old is he?

Strictlymad · 11/12/2024 20:39

Mum of a respiratory vulnerable child here, normally you would get a temp seems if it’s gone on five days, it’s not responding to calpol, if they aren’t passing more than 2 wees in 24 hours, if they are confused, if they actually feel cold to the touch (chest and back) or any rashes/marks bruises, or swollen/peeling hands and feet, or any signs of respiratory distress- sucking ribs etc.
last week my non vulnerable child who normally doesn’t fall sick more than a runny nose had a temp of 41.6 which didn’t budge no matter what I did so I took her to a and e- they managed to get it down after almost 36 hours, was rsv and they prescribed precautionary antibiotics and hwr cough was horrific.
if it’s responding to calpol take him to the go tomorrow as it’s been five days, any of the warning signs I wrote above go to a and e or call 111 this evening

Nejnej · 11/12/2024 20:39

I was told it takes about 48 hours for antibiotics to kick in, so would probably get him checked tomorrow if getting better x

BoilingHotand50something · 11/12/2024 20:40

Yes age is an important factor as advice would vary.

But he is probably just fighting a virus and the temp is his body doing what it needs to do. A virus wouldn’t react to antibiotics and I am surprised they have been given without a confirmed infection.

Is he drinking, eating, ok in himself?

BoilingHotand50something · 11/12/2024 20:42

But to answer your question, no of course you are not being unreasonable to be concerned. Kids being ill is just the pits and it is so bloody stressful trying to work out if you should be seeking further advice.

Britanix · 11/12/2024 20:45

Thanks everyone he is 4 . The temp is coming down sorry for a few hours not to his normal temp but to around 37.5 then creeps back up.
Today he's been fine in himself , drinking okay not eating lots but he's picked on toast and crisps and a few chips.

His cough seems to have settled quite a bit but I'm not sure if they were related . The GP said his chest and ears were clear , there is nothing obvious she said which in a way makes me more concerned.
We are moving house Friday 2 hours away just to add to the stress.

Also, I promise I am not being pedantic but I think you have only given 1 and a half days of medicine so if it is bacterial, it is entirely possible it will start kicking in tomorrow.

This is what I'm hoping x

I've got him in light pj bottoms and a t-shirt. With a thin sheet shall I take the sheet of , he didn't have one last night and that's when he was shivering ?

BoilingHotand50something · 11/12/2024 21:21

I think he is fine with a sheet on him. As I said, his temperature shows his little body is fighting something and is not scary in itself. Temperatures also go up overnight but settle more in the day. I would say just keep an eye on him and keep alert for red flags such as not weeing, temp spiking / not coming down with calpol etc.

Hey, my four year old DS came down with a very high temp and cough last Sunday. He ran a fever all week (reduced by calpol/neurofen) but it was stubborn and really lingered. Thorough check at GP and everything was clear - chest, ears, throat. He was just hot and uncomfortable for longer than I'd have expected. I was concerned and thought we'd never emerge from it but he did in the end!

How is little one today @Britanix

hope your scan went ok.

Britanix · 12/12/2024 19:18

Thanks for checking in x Scan went well all seems to be okay . He's been to school today as its his last day 😭. He's fine in himself but his temps been going up to 38 again at times , he seems a bit snotty today so hoping it's just taking its time to settle .

Just a quick update i gave him some nurofen about 8 o'clock, I woke up about 1am and his temp has been sitting at around 35 since I've put a quilt over him and he's cuddled into me .

Trying not to Google/panic as this has happened a couple of times following a temp and GP said it can be normal. Of a night he normally drops.to just under 36.

yipyipyop · 13/12/2024 03:33

@Britanix I wouldn't worry about the temp being 35. My ds is 4 often has a temp of around that at night. Hope he gets better soon

Stirrednshaken · 13/12/2024 22:12

Very normal at night. Don't worry about that. Sounds like he's on the mend x
