newmummylucy · 11/12/2024 15:39

I started a new job in September and have had 1 day off when my DC was unwell and I didnt have childcare at the end of sept. I now am pretty sure I have a chest infection. I went to the pharmacist and he thinks its a chest infection...Im couging up yellow mucus and my chest hurts when im breathing in and i just feel generally unwell. AIBU to call in sick for a day? I dont want to seem like a liability. I have a desk job FYI

If you are genuinely too unwell to work then you’re too unwell to work

If you feel too unwell to go to work call in sick? Only you know the answer to if you feel like you can’t go in. Maybe make an appointment with the gp?

Id be nervous tbh if I was still on probation and probably drag myself in if I’d already been off in September.

If you're sick, you're sick 🤷‍♀️

Just go. Take all the medication so can safely take and relax and get to bed early.. it won't look good.

Mrsttcno1 · 11/12/2024 15:47

From a manager’s point of view I personally wouldn’t be bothered about 2 days of absence in 4 months, especially with the reasons given unwell child- can’t be helped and then chest infection- can’t be helped, especially this time of year. If someone had 4 days in 4 months and were saying d&v for all 4 then I’d probably be thinking hmm no, but I wouldn’t be bothered in this instance

Thankyou for this perspective. My dc has just started primary school so illnesses were a given with her. Ive been to work alot while unwell but im not feeling great with a chest infection

How have you performed in your probation period? Do you think they won’t beleive you?

If it was only an 8 hour shift, and I was worried, if I could go in I would.

Sleetwave · 11/12/2024 15:49

I’m a manager too and it wouldn’t bother me if you were otherwise reliable and worked hard. It will be quite obvious to your manager if you’re unwell. Make sure you actually call them so they can hear that you’re ill.

HPandthelastwish · 11/12/2024 15:50

You know in advance so inform your manager so they can make any arrangements now.

Are you able to WFH, if you are ill but well enough for that it might be an option.

My work doesn't want anyone in the building who are ill and it's expected you WFH if you are coughing and sneezing

I think quite well. I work hard and even have a bonus coming which was unexpected

1 day for illness in 4 months is nothing to worry about as long as it doesn't become a pattern. when DC was ill I guess you took annual leave or unpaid parental leave but didn't call in sick. I wouldn't worry..

Drag myself in and then go home ill once they have seen you are. I decent line manager/bunch of colleagues will suggest it. Also make a doctors appt

by that logic, parents can never call in sick. what a whole load of bollocks.

ThatIsNotMyNameSoWhyAreYouCallingMeThat · 11/12/2024 15:58

As always, probation is a red herring. You’ve no employment rights for 2 years.

But I doubt this will wave any red flags. If you’re not well enough to work, you’re not well enough to work.

GreatGatsby212 · 11/12/2024 15:58

Dont go into work and spread your infection around!

Having 2 days off sick in 4 months wouldn't be an issue for me and I say this as a manager. If you're sick, you're sick 🤷🏾‍♀️
