To be really pissed off about my office's attitude towards our food bank donation

Every year we run an office collection for a local food bank. This year we're doing one for families with nothing and young children.

So far im the only one who has really donated. I understand times are tough, but it's £1 for a pack of biscuits in Iceland.

People are making horrible comments too, about the branded names etc and the ungrateful brats who don't deserve it. It's for young children. It just breaks my heart.

I'm so close to taking it all home and donating it myself

Ah I see what you mean, like a wind up type thing?

Yeah, wind up/stop mithering me combo.

orangegato · 11/12/2024 16:32

This winds me up as much as bucket shakers. Getting all up in peoples business scrutinising lunches to assess whether people should donate. You sound insufferable.

People may do their own bit for charities and won’t be guilted into buying Iceland biscuits to please you.

In another thread people were talking about how much they spent on DC this christmas. It was 150-2000 £ for one child so I think most can afford 1£...

But of they don't approve of the charity, or they just don't want to, that isn't a problem. Charity donation is a choice.

Regardless of whether they can afford it or not, it's voluntary to donate.

Comedycook · 11/12/2024 16:33

How old are you op? You sound quite young? Are you still living with parents?

SaagAloopa · 11/12/2024 16:33

LookingForAHandHold · 11/12/2024 15:28

Well we're all supposed to donate, I've taken charge because everyone else ignores it

It's a local charity for homeless families, I don’t know how anyone can disagree with it. It's just maddening seeing the number of treats put out daily but nobody wants to help children who would go hungry otherwise

You can't make people donate.

Try and get them to talk about it. I will not donate to food banks after I found out somebody who owns numerous houses outright, as in £millions, was rocking up on a weekly basis to use one in Shrewsbury.

Forcing people to donate is selfish and thoughtless.

Someone in the office put up a food collection box the day before yesterday. I didn't really want to be bringing in heavy tins and bags into the office.

Then just bring in lightweight crisps 🤷‍♀️

So you live with your parents and have that sense of security. When you have to pay for your own home and have your own DC to feed and clothe, you may well feel less charitable.

Forcing? Are you for real? One mail telling people that they CAN donate is not forcing.

Well if you had to pay rent, bills etc, you might find putting 90 quid into a charity box you don't approve of might grate slightly.

I don't get why though when I'm already contributing money to charities?

I know anyone can say anything but I did an online donation for £100 last pay day.

A work-wide expectation to donate is forcing. 😵‍💫

I also suspect like a pp said, your colleagues are on a wind up.

Megifer · 11/12/2024 16:37

All these posters who clearly use a knackered old phone to MN from and basic WiFi, and are on tinned soup for Christmas dinner because they just need the basics in life and donate all their spare money to charity.....really is heartwarming. You're better people than me, i get a lot of materialistic joy in little luxuries.

Don't forget to put a post on FB letting everyone know how much you go without so you can make your massive donations

anon12345anon · 11/12/2024 16:38

I donate to the charities I support - you sound like a holier than thou idiot-

Brilliant - you support food banks- but you think everyone else should as well?
Grow up.

OK. But since you were talking about the hassle about bringing in tins...so it really wasn't about that, it was about you not wanting to contribute which is fine ofcourse.

I tend not to give to food banks. It makes me angry that our government doesn't do more to end food poverty and I think that food banks let the government off the hook. It also makes me fizz that supermarkets encourage working people to buy more food (increasing their profits) when they could lower the price of food or donate the food themselves. I think we've sleep-walked into a situation where ordinary working people are topping up a welfare system whilst our government fails to tax big business.

Having said all of that I do still give to charity. I also work for one.

Oh dear.....

Kindly meant, but let this go. Your colleagues may already resent you for it, and if they don't yet, any more antics around the issue are going to make them.

I think the point of giving to charity is you have to personally want to . I always found it irritating working for a company who did the whole food bank thing then the bosses would pose with the table of plenty for social media shots. I think if companies want to give they should, not bully the staff into giving. They can encourage through donation matching etc but it shouldn’t be mandatory.

Hardly an expectation since OP is the only one who donated...
