i am such a tell tale

just been to tesco and parked in p&t space (WITH my children) and noticed a big posh saab acroos in disabled with no blue badge, thought to myself what an arse and went and did the shopping.

when i came out i was driving out the space when i seen the saab reverse into a fiesta, i could actually see the fiesta move forward with the impact.

the saab driver just drove of by this point i was next to it and could see a big dent in the fiesta and the paint was scratched of, plus i managed to get the saab's number plate was reapeting it over and over in my head and trying to get the kids to stop talking till i wrote it down.

so not only did he think he was to good to walk across the car park after parking in a normal space he also thought he was to good to stop and insect the damage he had done to someone elses car.

Good for you!

Bluestocking · 30/04/2008 16:27

Good for you, some f*cker wrote my car off in a car park (reversed so hard into the driver door that it couldn't be opened) and didn't leave their details. I wish a good citizen like you had been on hand!

youknownothingofthecrunch · 30/04/2008 16:28

Good, you are an excellent snitch

louloulouise · 30/04/2008 16:28

We always do this each time we see it happen (yes it's happened more than once where we live ) it's only fair on the owner of the car. Good for you!!

well done- someone dented our rear bumper and broke our reg plate too....cost a fair bit to knock our the dent and replace the plate....no number or anything from the person who did it!!

DH reversed into a jag when he'd just passed his test, (car hadn't gone into drive and was still in reverse) and there was a tiny paint scratch...the man who owned it was a very big scary looking man, we'd waited to let him know, he looked at it, then pointed out bigger dents and scratches caused by someone else who'd not had the decency to fess up- he told us not to worry!! Nice man!!

Not so long ago I clipped the wing mirror of a car whilst on the school run (very, very narrow road with cars parked along each side). I had no paper or whatever in my car and there was nowhere safe to pull over and the driver of the car was nowhere to be seen, so I drove home.

I went home and wrote my details down and drove back to the damaged car to put the note under the wipers. When I got there some 'kind citizen' had written a snotty letter with my number plate etc on it saying that i was a danger on the road and had just driven off without even stopping to look.

It was 5 mins max between me clipping the mirror and returning with the note, so that person must've been practically leaping out of the car to snitch the very second I caught it.

Anyway, the owner of the car phoned me up and there was no damage etc, he was very nice. I explained what had happened with the notes, he was absolutely fine with it.

Obviously I am not saying that the Saab driver is the same as I was (after all, there were plenty of places to pull back in and he could have poped back into the supermarket for a pen and paper), or that the busybody is the same as you.

good for you. i would have done the same

BecauseImWorthIt · 30/04/2008 16:48

If you do this you should put a note under the wiper of the damaged car saying that you witnessed the incident and tell the driver of that car to report it - the police may not do anything unless they make a complaint.

I witnessed something similar, except I was in the back of a cab. The lorry in front of us swiped the side of a parked car, which happened to be a Porsche. I took the lorry's registration and reported the driver to the police. Their response, when I told them that the car was a Porsche, was just to say "oh well, I'm sure they can afford to get it fixed" WTF?!

They did say though, that unless the Porsche driver reported it that there was nothing that they could do.

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 30/04/2008 17:05

I hope you have got the right registration number written down. I was once sat in our car in a car park waiting to meet my boyfriend (now DH) and I witnessed a bloke breaking into a car and stealing the stereo. It was before we had a mobile phone, so I waited, got his reg as he drove away, wrote it down and then went into nearby pub to use phone to call police. They arrived in a few minutes, took the reg off me and did a check on it but it came up with nothing. Now I may have written it down wrong, or the thief may have had dodgy plates himself, but the way the policeman went on at me, you'd have thought I was the criminal

BouncingTurtle · 30/04/2008 17:09

Similar thing happened to me, was in huge Asda car park on Xmas Eve (yes were a bit mad!) and it was absolutely manic, saw some twunt take out 2 cars , me and another person took donw the number plate, called into the store and a member of staff called the police and the owners of the cars that had been damaged. Got a phone call from one of the drivers a month later, apparently the licence plate was no good - didn't match the description of the car. Yet both myself and the other person cross checked with each other that we had written down the same licence plate (which we had) and the description of car and driver, so the police had to conclude that the car had false plates on.

I've done just that in Sainsburys and it did go to court and the swine got nailed! He too took the time to closely inspect the damage he'd done before sauntering into the shop.

I actually waited til the owner of the dented car came out and proudly presented the reg number..

tearinghairout · 30/04/2008 17:18

You did the right thing.

shouldbeworking · 30/04/2008 18:12

I did the same thing. I was waiting in Tesco's car park for dh to pick me up when this old guy got in his car and reversed into another car and drove off. I waited for the owner to turn up and gave him the reg of the car and my name and address. About 6 months later the man turned up at my house with a bottle of wine and some chocolates as his claim had just been settled and my witness statement had swung it.

spicemonster · 30/04/2008 19:26

I love people like you. A couple of years ago, some git took a corner badly in his vehicle (a white van since you ask) and crumpled my wing and half ripped my bumper off. He got out and checked the damage. Some kindly passer-by noted down his registration number and I was so pleased to see the note under my windscreen wiper after being nearly in tears when I saw the back of it
