This is the 18 year old lad who had a holiday romance with a 17 year old girl in Dubai. She was just short of 18.

her parents found out and reported him to the Dubai authorities before he returned home.

his poor parents aren’t well off and had to return home to work leaving him there.

he’s now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

aibu to think this poor boy should never have been brought before court.

You literally said it’s not a British site It’s a London site. Well being a London site would make it a British site. Clearly you are very cleaver

Careful, you are using logic there.

I don't want him jailed.
But I don't have a problem with other countries jailing people from other countries for breaking their laws, even if those offences wouldn't be crimes in the UK. It is up to the people visiting the countries to be aware of local laws. Ignorance of the law can never be used an excuse.

And a year in prison isn't the end of the world. Whatever he was planning to do this year, Uni, or whatever, he can do a year later.

If he survives.

People saying this 18 year old boy on holiday with his family should have looked up the laws on the age of consent need to remember their own youth I think! We did girls holidays to Benidorm, Malia and Ayia Napa and I couldn’t tell you the Spanish or Greek age of consent without googling it! This boy isn’t a rapist or a danger to women FFS he’s a daft teenage boy who had unadvisable sex with a teenage girl of similar age! A year in jail is very disproportionate.

I completely agree
However, I would say that too many British people assume that everywhere is just like The U or even Europe. Dubai is very different to Spain, Greece etc and people need to realise that before they travel there.
When we have travelled long haul I am always very aware that we are somewhere very diffferent and extra care needs to be taken with a lot of things.
I am not blaming this young man but its a general assertion that overseas travel is so much more common and accessible now a days that some people forget that they are somewhere that might have a very different culture and legal system.

Why are you calling her a “minor child”.

In the UK, where the mom was, the relationship was perfectly legal. So she saw texts that her of age child was in a relationship with a boy who was of a similar age (same school year but a couple of months older).

Why do you think this translates to concerns about a “minor child”?

This is why:
Introduction. The Family Law Reform Act, which came into force on 1 January 1970, defines a child as a person who has not yet reached the age of 18 years. In addition the British Nationality Act 1981 contains, for its own purposes, a definition of a minor as 'a person who has not attained the age of 18 years'.

We don't only know from his family. The court case will have been public so news organisations would have access to information from the court case directly. I have only ever heard it reported as a consensual relationship.

Please link to court transcripts if you think they are public ….
i think you will find that they are not.

What does that have to do with my question?

Do you adhere to the misogynist trope that women / girls are the property of their families?

Do you view a 17 year old as the property of her family?

You are mis-representing the law in respect to MF …. Just look it up, nothing about property.

NewGreenDuck · 31/12/2024 13:53

On a wider point, do you think anyone should be prosecuted if they commit a crime abroad? If the crime would not be a crime in the UK? Or not seen as seriously? Or would you say ' when in Rome'?

The nationality of the person should be irrelevant.

I did not say teens were not tech savvy.

I said nobody, let alone teens, looks up age of consent laws before they travel.

They especially don’t research if it is illegal for them to date their similar aged peer.

If you think most people do, I don’t know what to say.

How many of the countries you have visited over the years did you research their laws on age of consent before travelling?

Edited

The gov.un website has travel advice which I always check travelling to unfamiliar country …. Do I need a visa, are there safety issues, scams. Do I need to cover up. Alcohol & drugs policy.

——
Oh, says 18 year old … when visiting America - I can consume alcohol in UK so sure u can in USA too!
American 18 year old, I spoke weed all day in the street in Brooklyn so of course can in Hackney!
Im sure the 18 year olds know the problem listed above w alcohol & weed … why are consent rules any different.

Still- we only know what his family reports.

British High Commission hadn’t clarified their role and if they acted without knowing full facts. Like, are they the ones who introduced nationality as Pakistan … because they didn’t have correct info. Because nature of the crime, public will likely never know.

Girl family version of events - we don’t know what mother of minor child understood to have happened and the content of the phone messages. Possible that it was very inflammatory & upsetting. Not all hugs and kisses. There have been reports … but they are from MF family. Everything has been “poor little boy, & consent”. Girl on birth control (so this means consent? Perhaps it’s for medical reasons. Maybe she needed “morning after pill” which tells as mother story) Public have no idea if this is even true.

IMO - there is more to know than poor little boy, consent, days from birthday, already sexually active, bad mum.

The facts … lead to his conviction & incarceration. Selling your story to tabloids won’t get you set free.

Message to the world - Don’t mess about in Dubai.

No I think the message to the world is don't go to Dubai.

So, what, are you suggesting that people convicted of crimes in other countries are quashed or do not stand if they come back to or visit the uk.
Also, this is a London based forums not a British forum, that uses web server hosting providers DSC Limited, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform many of which are not based in the UK for back-end storage.

A year in prions may not be the end of the world depending on the prison.

The aftermath of having a criminal record can be the end of the world however or at least make life extremely more difficult.

That doesn’t answer my question.

What concerns would the mother possibly have about a relationship that was perfectly legal where she was between two persons of almost identical ages. She was barely a “minor child” in comparison to him.

She claims two teens embarking on a relationship is “disrespectful to the girl’s family”.

I asked how so unless you view the girl as the property of her family.

Neither.

I just looked up the age of consent in Cyprus - my first ever holiday with other teen friends and it is 17. Thank goodness!

(But three year close in age exemption which makes sense).

So over 20 years after I first went I now know!

A quick check on the GOV.UK website is very informative. I would expect that.

It generally doesn’t spell out age of consent laws.

And if it did I would expect seasoned travellers to consult that, not a pair of teens.

Your question was “why are you calling her a minor child”?

Because … legally, chronologically, factually if she was under 18, she was a minor child. Why is that confusing or unacceptable? I called her a minor, because she was.

We don’t know the other side of the story. The victim in this crime has privacy, and they have chosen not to share their story. I’ll not make assumptions about her, or her mother. Girl was a minor, at the time of the crime.

What possible concerns are there over two teens embarking on a relationship with a mere couple of months between them in age?

A relationship which was perfectly legal in their country of residence. To try to make out that he is a predatory adult and she was some young minor is silly. They were the same school year.

No not “disrespecting a girl” - “disrespecting her family”.

How is a girl and boy making a mutual decision to date each other “disrespectful to her family” unless you view her as their property.

He’s a teen. Two months older than his holiday romance.

If you think the average teenager researches the age of consent before embarking on a family holiday….well….
