My dd had her appendix out a month ago I've included a photo. The stitches haven't come away (that's the yellow in the middle). It's red and itchy but there's no pus. Is it normal or does she need to go to a doctor?

Yes I would get that checked out just to be safe, If she has an elevated temperature I would ring 111. Hope you get sorted

I'd go, if you can't get an appointment send a photo, that stitch should have dissolved by now unless it's an external one which would need removing.

Looks like it could be a granuloma, but better to get it checked.

Edit just read a stitch was there. Granulomas are caused when a would heals so I’m leaning more to this, especially if she’s no fever and there’s no pus. They can get infected though so if it is a granuloma keep it clean, bathe it in salt water and pat it dry. I got a granuloma after stitches and my dd had an umbilical granuloma after her cord dropped off.

It doesn't look infected to me. My skin usually goes a dark colour like that when healing and scars can be very itchy. If you've got concerns though then get it checked.

There's no harm in asking an actual medical professional

buttonousmaximous · 11/12/2024 11:40

Thank you got an out of hours appointment and she's been prescribed antibiotics

I got a granuloma after a laparoscopy 30 years ago. It still gets itchy from time to time.

Itchy means healing. When skin is damaged your body send lots of chemicals rushing to the site of damage to help with the healing process, and these are called histamines. Unfortunately these cause skin to itch. And that's why we take anti-histamines after we've been stung, or had an allergic reaction....to get rid of the itchy chemicals that's are only doing their best to heal us and repair the damage. You've got to feel a bit sorry for them really haven't you?

Hi buttonousmaximous,
I was wondering if your dd is ok now? Our son had his appendix out 2 months ago and looks like the photo you posted. Doc didn’t give antibiotics as swab came back clear. Just been told to leave it.
Has your dd’s cleared up?
