There isn't a 'true' mirror?

You get used to the ones you have, but sometimes they're extreme. We have one at home that actually makes people gasp in horror when they catch themselves in it Grin

But on holiday, it was like a funhouse!
One bedroom had a huge wall mounted 'thin' mirror that stretched my head into the shape of Bert from Sesame Street (Hi Burt!), and a whopper of a wide mirror in the other bedroom. This wasn't so much wide as almost wavy, just like the ones you might see in a funhouse.
The wide mirror stretched my cheeks outwards so that I looked 20 yrs younger, yet unfathomably squat.

Mirror in the bathroom gave us cone shaped foreheads.

Do you have what you would call a true mirror? And if so, how do you know?
Shop windows are notoriously distorted, and the worst changing rooms I can recall were good old marks&spencer's.

Vintage mirrors tend to be a lot more accurate. They are thicker, heavier and, therefore, straighter. I have one, it's awesome. All modern mirrors are distorted in some way, I find.

The mirrors in primark are always horrible! I think it's so you think "it's not the polyester making me look all lumpy and misshapen and fat, it's just what I look like, so I might as well buy this"

When I see my husband in a mirror I'm like who the fuck is that!? He looks so, so different. He looks kind of like himself in photos but only some of them and nothing like himself in a mirror. I can only assume he has a very unsymmetrical face but it looks pretty symmetrical when I look at his actual face 🤷‍♀️

Exactly this! Mr Toast's face in a mirror looks like the left and right halves don't match!
I once stayed in an Airbnb where the mirrors were placed really high (I am on the short side but not especially so). I only really saw the top of my head for three days 😀in my experience, the cheaper the mirror the more wavy it is, giving the full Hall of Mirrors experience

We have a fantastic one from Ikea that makes me look about two stones lighter.
I used to love going to Matalan because their mirrors were always extremely flattering too.

I hate my hairdresser's mirror. It's really weird looking at yourself and nothing else for a long length of time.

Thomasina79 · 09/12/2024 10:00

I feel the same about mirrors and avoid them. However I know my tummy is too fat, I don’t need a mirror to point this out!

Noseyoldcow · 09/12/2024 10:04

There's something wrong with every reflection of me. I am way, way better looking than that!

I think the cheaper a mirror is the worse it is - something technical to do with production costs I read about once and a PP was correct re the older style mirrors being more accurate with better clarity. Also lighting, M&S have terrible lighting.
The mirror at my new H&M store makes you look thinner which is a disappointment when you get home with the item.
I have a B&Q one I bought in lockdown for £20 and it makes me look 1ft taller and thinner, it’s ridiculous but quite funny.

brightdawnfading · 09/12/2024 10:41

I've decided that the mirrors I look best in are definitely the true mirrors. Its definitely those ones. No doubt about it.

Game0fCrones · 09/12/2024 14:06

Ive always wondered why hairdressers mirrors are so bad.

They need to be lit from the base with a slightly warm toned light that shines on your face. My hairdressers has spotlights directly above the chair which make me look like Dracula.

DecayingRelic · 09/12/2024 14:10

Just had my hair cut, since when did my face become so bloody round and where on earth has that ginormous double chin come from??😓

SensibleSigma · 09/12/2024 14:11

Ha! I sorted this one, once I realised.

Get someone to stand behind you and compare your reflection with reality. They can tell you whether it’s accurate. You can look at them in your mirror.

If you are going clothes shopping look at yourself in your current outfit before trying on the new one. If you look better than expected, it’s a flattering mirror so take that into account.

I always check now.

On a recent jeans-buying expedition, one pair I tried on gave me three bum cheeks per side, for a total of 6 bum cheeks. Can’t blame the mirror for that one I’m afraid. I’m not even sure I can blame the jeans as I doubt anyone would buy ones that gave you 6 bum cheeks…

murasaki · 09/12/2024 15:18

I suspect all my mirrors are fine and sadly it's me that's the problem.

Hair dresser mirrors are the worst. And at no other time do we have to sit in front of one for so long. Trying not to look becomes a challenge in itself.

SharpOpalNewt · 09/12/2024 15:22

I look great in the mirror. In photos, not so much.

DonnaBanana · 09/12/2024 16:15

There's a bloke who makes reversing mirrors but they aren't cheap!

I have one in my car as standard, it’s not anything special most people have them

redalex261 · 09/12/2024 16:40

Yes, If I owned a clothes shop flattering mirrors and lighting would be my first investment!

But, have to say, those Zoom and Teams developers are evil bastards - can be terrifying on a bad WFH day! Grin

SwerveCity · 09/12/2024 16:46

I don’t know what’s wrong with the mirror on my wardrobe door. It seems fine. I get dressed and ready in it and think I look ok, then I see actual photos of myself and think wtf happened.

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2024 17:35

I'm usually thinner in the morning
I fill up the whole mirror by lunchtime
