Heated blankets - what to do if they need a good wash?

Possibly the daftest question on MN today, but....
We bought my darling Dad a beautiful heated blanket for Christmas last year, as his old bones really felt the cold. It wasn't a cheap one and he had 3 months of constant use out of it before he sadly passed away. He would eat his meals on a lap tray, which was invariably on top of his blanket over his knees. Being 90 years old and rather shaky, food detritus inevitably made its way onto the blanket. My cat also loved to curl up on his lap on colder days. In short, the blanket needs a bloody good wash!

Aside from a good sponging down, which I don't think is going to be very effective, is there an alternative way to clean these things? We'd love to use it, especially as Dad loved it so much and it would be a lovely reminder of him, but it just feels too grubby at the moment to even contemplate snuggling up in it!

Ours is machine washable

itsalwaysthesame · 08/12/2024 22:34

Dry cleaners?

itsalwaysthesame · 08/12/2024 22:34

Sorry for your loss too

JustAFear · 08/12/2024 22:34

Mine just goes in the washing machine - the wire un clips. Is there a label on it, or do you know the brand to google and check?

doodleschnoodle · 08/12/2024 22:34

Most are machine washable when you disconnect the cable. I've washed mine a few times.

Imisschocolate17 · 08/12/2024 22:35

Mine is machine washable and has washed fine, just unclip the power lead

Xyz1234567 · 08/12/2024 22:35

Mine is also machine washable. I'm sure if you know the make, you can look it up online.

YourWinter · 08/12/2024 22:37

I have two and they’re both machine washable on a wool cycle, line dry. Just unplug the power cord from the blanket.

JumpstartMondays · 08/12/2024 22:38

Mine also goes in the machine

Onthesideofthespiders · 08/12/2024 22:38

It should be machine washable. Mine is. Almost all the ones I looked at before buying it were all machine washable.

GotToGetDinner · 08/12/2024 22:39

This is good to hear! I have a one year old electric blanket which I haven't yet washed because I didn't know how to!!! It needs a good wash like yours does OP! So maybe it can go in the washing machine :) hope so!

BarbieKew · 08/12/2024 22:40

Mine is machine washable too. However it’s got a white fleecy lining, and has got mucky round the edges. Has anyone ever washed theirs on a hotter wash than the instructions say?

Sebsaloysius · 08/12/2024 22:46

OMG I'm such a dunderhead! I have never even checked to see if the power cable disconnects. Off to look now and will report back.....

Ok, so I'm not convinced. The plastic connection comes apart where it meets the blanket, but the part that remains does have the receiving pins in it for when the other end is connected, if that makes sense? Does that mean it's still ok to wash?

Has it not got a label with instructions? Sounds fine though, same as my electric blanket (which is washable). Just need to make sure it’s properly dry.

Peanutssuck · 08/12/2024 22:54

Following. With interest !

Yes if it disconnects it should be fine to wash.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/12/2024 22:56

Sounds very similar to mine which goes through the machine fine.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/12/2024 22:56

Mine is washable. Look at the label, and if no clues there, can you find the listinh online?

NotVeryFunny · 08/12/2024 22:58

All mine are machine washable. Look at the label. Mine has washing instructions.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 08/12/2024 22:58

This is the connector on my blanket that has been through the wash many times.

I can't remember the brand and I don't think there's a label on there (the flippin' cats on it again at the moment and to uproot her would set off a mood swing (she's about 56 in human years and I'm convinced she's menopausal)

Bless you all, yes my connection looks a lot like that, @GargoylesofBeelzebub . It's going on its maiden voyage to the washing machine tomorrow!

And see what I mean about the menopausal moggy? Talk about a death stare!

Mine was the same after unclipping the cable and I was doubtful, but put it in to wash and it was fine.

SnoopySantaPaws · 08/12/2024 23:40

dreamies would get her off, no???

im really sorry to hear about your Dad🤗

id assume its machine washable, but id try to remember the brand, or where you bought it from etc if it doesn't have a label... just to check.
