Out of date pastry - yes or no?

Found a roll of Tesco ready rolled puff in the back of the fridge. Use by 2nd Dec, it's now 8th. Looks and smells perfectly OK, but I'm always more wary of 'use by' (if it was just 'best before' I'd definitely go for it).

Use or bin?
YABU - Use

That's too far past the use by for me. I don't tend to go more than 2 days past a use by on anything pre prepared, only fresh fruit and veg where it's obviously OK.

Movinghouseatlast · 08/12/2024 18:42

Absolutely use it. Smell it. Does it smell OK? ( I bet it does)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/12/2024 18:42

I'd use it! It's fat, flour and water. Should be fine.

Magnastorm · 08/12/2024 18:42

It'll be fine.

Mum4MrA · 08/12/2024 18:42

If it looks and smells ok I would probably use it, especially as it’s only a few days out of date. You can usually tell it’s off once you start rolling it.

piefacedClique · 08/12/2024 18:42

I would absolutely use it. As long as it smells ok it’s fine.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/12/2024 18:46

Presuming it’s not gone mouldy or slimy I’d use it. Use by dates tend to be overly cautious and I’m used to relying on look / smell because a lot of the food we buy doesn’t come neatly wrapped in plastic from the supermarket.

JC03745 · 08/12/2024 18:46

I had out of date pastry and when I opened the box, it was covered in green mould- that is how I realised it was out of date 😬

If it smells fine, and isn't green, I would use it.

Ahappymediumlarge · 08/12/2024 18:52

Right then, I'll give it a go 😁

Totally fine, unless it has visible mould on it (highly unlikely).

It may be slightly past its best in terms of condition (might dry out a bit/be harder to roll), but will be edible. I would use it for sure.

What is it that you think would be wrong with it? It's just flour and fat, neither of which will spoil past their BBE date. They may be slightly past their best, but will be edible!

Because it's not a best before- it's a use by. Use by dates are stricter. I do normally go over them myself but not that much.

Unless it smells or has visible mould, it'll be fine.

Anotherparkingthread · 08/12/2024 22:59

It will be fine. Pastry tends to smell sour and slightly yeasty right before it goes mouldy so you would know by the way it smelled if it was spoiled.

IAmNeverThePerson · 08/12/2024 23:00

I used pastry dated 27th Nov tonight. No one has keeled over.

You're right that it's a use by, not BBE. But it will still be fine if it is showing no signs of having spoiled.

My tub of spreadable butter has a use by date of a month ago. I just checked out of interest. It is totally fine, and I'm sure it will be until it's used up in a couple of weeks. Dairy will let you know if it's not fine by growing blue mould, or souring - it's not like meat.

OP - I see you have, wisely, eaten the pastry. I hope it was tasty!
