To wonder why my neighbour doesn't feel bad about the racket her wind chimes are making?

In this wind they're so loud - I guess she likes the sound?

I can't complain because she is a nightmare so I keep her sweet.

Wind chimes are appalling- they're the middle-class equivalent of screaming "Get 'ere naow!!" at your kids 24/7 with all your windows open.

They aren't something useful that happen to have an unpleasant noisy side-effect, like a lawn mower; they're wholly designed to send your neighbours postal.

Anybody who puts them up, unless they have no neighbours for a mile or more, is deliberately being anti-social and looking to make people hate them.

Or they've entered, "Just don't care anymore" territory, due to noisy neighbours, so why the heck not? Bamboo windchimes are awful. I have expensive high quality ones that are beautiful. If the neighbours want them gone, I'm willing to make a deal.

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/12/2024 02:50

I love my very loud wind chimes, several sets.

I'll consider taking them down when next door gets rid of his leaf blowing machine, barking dog and screaming kids.

Healingsfall · 08/12/2024 00:13

Does this mean we cam also tape shut dogs who bark, kids who scream and parents who shout at said kids! All are life choices who create a nuisance noise to neighbours directly surrounding!

Exactly.

Wind chimes make me laugh. I love their sound but the reasons for them even existing don't really relate to Barbara in her mid terrace in Bournemouth. Garden centres really have a lot to answer for!

I have them because they are soothing.

If anyone wants to make an issue of it, I'll tell them they're a memorial set for my child who passed. Then see if they still have the heart to make an issue of it.

is that a lie or the truth?

QueenCamilla · 08/12/2024 03:22

Anyone who thinks it alright to put in the vicinity of their neighbours an item whose sole purpose is to make noise day and night... Is a complete dickwad.

I would talk to the neighbours without a hesitation about the noise issue. And then it depends on the outcome of that conversation.
Life is too short to listen to Dave soothe himself in the garden.

I have a child that passed. They were our neighbours at the time so are well aware. It's not true the wind chimes are a memorial set, but they don't know that.

And if you were my neighbour I would say, "I put off getting them for years out of consideration for you. When it became clear you had no consideration with us in relation to your own noise which we have spoken to you about and you refuse to address, I decided I was free to also do what I want. The wind chimes stay. I'm willing to revisit this when you stop doing x. Bye."

QueenCamilla · 08/12/2024 03:33

@TheForestCalls
Well, your neighbour is a dickwad.
And you've put the chimes up in retaliation, which I can understand (I've done worse out of frustration).
I hope there are no other neighbours.

Though OP's situation seems different and having a chat with the self-soothing neighbour might still resolve things.

No other neighbours that can hear it. I haven't put it up in retaliation. I've just decided I'm free to do something I always wanted to do. I'm filling my own wish, not doing it to spite them.

We had a new neighbour move in a few years ago. It was obvious from the start he was going to be a prick. First thing he did was put up wind chimes and he’s bloody deaf!!

Maddy70 · 08/12/2024 08:00

Wind chimes from my neighbours keep me awake every night. Bloody awful anti social things

And the lovely neighbours opposite have to endure their nouse AND your windchimes......

CyranoDeBergerQuack · 08/12/2024 08:42

I hope you don't live near a church or you life really would be dreadful

VeryOddBall · 08/12/2024 08:44

SmalllChange · 07/12/2024 23:09

Yes you can complain.

I hate wind chimes, they're anti-social bloody noise and they drive me mad.

I taped my neighbour's chimes up with parcel tape in the Summer when she was on holiday.

She must've got the message because when she came home, she removed them, thank goodness.

Did you use your words first? Or just resort to vandalism as a first attempt?

LetsNCagain · 08/12/2024 08:50

The only thing worse than wind chimes is a water feature.

When we were searching for a house, there was an amazing one in an area we liked, spacious, good condition, and a good 10% cheaper than similar properties. It had been on the market for a while. We viewed it. Next door had turned their whole garden into a faux-japanese water garden, with water on multiple levels separated by little weirs/waterfalls.

The god awful sloshy tinkly din! We could barely concentrate on what the estate agent was saying, I just felt like I needed a wee the whole time. I wonder if it ever sold.

That sounds like heaven to me!

All of the above are far worse than wind chimes, so yes.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/12/2024 09:46

This is why having neighbours make people murderous.
My neighbours fence panels all fell over in the storm, all the panels are scattered around my garden and he hasn't bothered to pick them up. I'm buggered if I'm going to. Lazy twat of a man.

ZippyDoodle · 08/12/2024 09:49

Bloody annoying things

If I was a 5 year year old I would've 'used my words'.

But as I'm a 55 year old woman, I just had a conversation with her instead.

Wind chimes are instruments of torture. One of our old neighbours had bamboo ones. All you heard 24/7 was "donk. Da donk. Donk. Donk"
Another had the tiny tinkly ones. It doesn't matter what they sound like. They're bloody noise pollution.

I really like them. More the massive ones that make quite a deep sound. I find them incredibly peaceful

uptheculdesac · 08/12/2024 13:57

I love these. If you scroll down a wee but you can hear them. I think they sound heavenly and peaceful
