They'd be pretty pissed off that a/ their main religious representatives (Catholic church) is worth BILLIONS of £, and yet b/ they accepted nearly a billion in DONATIONS, to rebuild Notre Dame? A BUILDING!
Because the Jesus I had forced on me as a kid, would probably have set that shit alight himself and given the money to the poor?

(P.s, excuse the shouting, I've been away for a decade and can't remember how to do italics 😖)

It’s not just a building, it’s a piece of history. Would it really be better if the Catholic Church spent their money on just one building? . Isn’t it responsible of them to accept donations?
And if they didn’t rebuild it, would it really have been a good use of their money to take it down?

I’m not a fan of the Catholic Church, but I do agree with them rebuilding the Notre Dame and using donations to do so

Blingedup · 07/12/2024 21:13

Historical buildings should be repaired, they’re a part of our background as humans. I’d rather they repaired that than knocked up another housing estate leaving schools and nhs struggling here.

Michelle12A · 07/12/2024 21:16

Maybe they are pissed off

Spagettifunctional · 07/12/2024 21:16

I’m Catholic but not proudly so. However I do feel this was important historically. It looks amazing now.

BrioNotBiro · 07/12/2024 21:17

I'm sure atheists from all over the world have contributed to the repair of such an important historic building, a treasure house of skilled craftsmanship.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 07/12/2024 21:18

Happy to be corrected but I think Notre Dame is actually owned by the French state.

SweetBobby · 07/12/2024 21:19

Do you reserve your outrage solely for Catholics rebuilding beautiful historical buildings?

Or are you against all types of preserving history?

crumblingschools · 07/12/2024 21:19

1000 historic oak trees were cut down to repair it

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/12/2024 21:20

Of all the objectionable things about The Church and whether God is real, THIS is the hill to die on? Bizarre.Confused

Windsweptandweird · 07/12/2024 21:33

Oh trust me, it's not a hill to die on. It just annoys me.
I'm all for history, and preservation, and I'm not sure what the answer would be otherwise.
Maybe I am being unreasonable. It wouldn't be the first time, 😆 I just find the whole thing...wrong.
And yes. In hindsight, it is owned by the state, but that really doesn't make me feel any better about it.

If you believe the Old Testament God got pissed off with the Jewish people regularly.
One poor man got stoned to death for collecting a bit of wood on the sabbath.
God is not the kindly gentleman were told about.

Ablondiebutagoody · 07/12/2024 21:38

What would God and Jesus prefer people spent their money on?

applerose01 · 07/12/2024 21:47

You’re conflating religion with Jesus. Jesus hated religion: its hypocrisy, the way it treated women, its power structures etc. Jesus was (is) awesome. Religion (a man (in the literal sense)-made form of control and oppression) somewhat less so.

Tralalalal · 07/12/2024 21:48

I agree with you, I think the whole point of God and the teachings of Jesus were about how we treat each other, not material objects. But as a species we are sooo far away from understanding what’s actually important, I think God would be more pleased with the man who gave his last penny than the religious buildings that people have built

RamblingEclectic · 07/12/2024 21:50

Notre Dame is owned by the French state, and billions that came in donations were specifically for the building and items that weren't covered by insurance (there were some concerns the French government might cut corners, like their choice to self insure the building...). I've not seen anything about donations going through the Catholic church, I've mostly seen collections were taken through different heritage societies.

Now some have argued that a significant part of those donations were for tax benefits which could reasonably be worth some ire and if Divinity exists, they might find this all foolish or maybe amusing, I wouldn't know, but if there is Divine ire, this time I think it would be unreasonable to aim much of it at the Catholic church.

Ludovicoswife · 07/12/2024 21:52

I’m glad it’s been rebuilt.

Also it’s very common for faith communities to donate and rebuild.

Also out of all the son of gods, messiahs ect. Jesus was sound. I’m pretty sure he was the original hippy.

Ablondiebutagoody · 07/12/2024 21:38

What would God and Jesus prefer people spent their money on?

The poor. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked etc.

Staringatthemoon · 07/12/2024 21:57

@Nikitaspearlearring which they do.

1dayatatime · 07/12/2024 21:59

So if there was a fire at say Big Ben would you want it rebuilt or the money spent on something else, what about Stonehenge or St Paul's Cathedral?

There will always be the poor in need of help and letting historic buildings disappear from history is never going to change that.

Stonehenge would probably be alright

What would God and Jesus prefer people spent their money on?

Perfume, according to the Gospels

CountFucula · 07/12/2024 22:04

Highly controversial opinion… but I feel the same about the Olympics. Any country that has millions of children living in poverty (or fewer!) should not host events costing billions.

Workingclasslass · 07/12/2024 22:06

I think there are two sides of this I think 100% you are correct about Jesus he would not have liked the gold and the trapping of many of these churches and how many people are poor and they own massive land in this country. It’s hypocrisy.
However, it is a historical building and it does need to be rebuilt

3luckystars · 07/12/2024 22:11

There was an actual Jesus though. Whether you believe he was God or not that’s up to you, but Jesus was here on earth and lived here, there are historical records of him.

Windsweptandweird · 07/12/2024 22:24

Erm... I'm no expert, but I'm fairly certain that jesus gave everything he had to the poor, and preached foe others to do the same.
