Trying to decide what to do. 3.5 hour journey across yellow warning areas with a child in tow. Don’t want to let anyone down but also don’t want to get stuck in potential tailbacks or worse.

AIBU - don’t go
ANBU - go!
stay safe everyone x

@JingleB thank you, that has put my mind at ease. I think because of how bad it's been everywhere else it's worried me a bit! DH said the same about how windy it usually is here anyway 😄

I wouldn't make any journey today and I'm in the yellow zone. I prefer the roads to be kept clear for people who REALLY have to drive (yellow zone, 52 miles per hour winds)

I’m in London (so not a yellow area) and am now re-assessing whether it is worth the 15 min drive to the supermarket because the wind sounds so strong :/ I think if you are going to do it, set off as soon as possible so you can build in tailbacks/the need to drive slowly and safely/the need to stop.

What is the event?

London definitely has a yellow warning for wind for all of today and tomorrow.

I think this is our 4th yellow warning in the last 2 months 😂

Heavy rain, ice, fog… all yellow warnings we are happy to stay home for. Wind, if not driving on exposed sections of road, would mean we’re basically housebound until spring.

We'll be on the road for 7-8 hours in total today, there and back. We live in an Amber zone and yes, it was wet and windy when we left, but the most dramatic thing that had happened was that our bin had blown down the drive. We get weather at least as bad as this multiple times per year in our area and nobody bothers. I've driven in far worse conditions on loads of occasions.
We're on the M6 in Lancashire now which I think is yellow. It's dry, clear and a bit breezy but nothing that I wouldn't walk or cycle in. It's quiet though so I presume lots of people have cancelled trips - far fewer people in the services than I'd expect on a Saturday this close to Christmas.

Mix of opinions, grateful for the non judgemental posts either way, thank you ☺️

We are seeing the family in 3 weeks at Christmas time and then again in January so I think it’s a sensible choice just to avoid potential risky travel.

It’s not the wind and the storm that’s my main concern for this journey to be honest, it’s the knock on effect of thousands of cancelled trains and how busy the roads would be; a 3.5 hour journey could potentially turn into 5/6+ hours and we have a very young child. The visit was only going to be for 1 overnight so overall it isn’t worth it.

Thanks for the good advice though, esp those who didn’t swear at me 😉 x

I'm in the n.e and it's just a normal level of winter perma-rain and a stiff breeze.

RubiesAndRaindrops · 07/12/2024 10:11

Yellow warning where I am but its both raining and pretty windy, it's quite noisy inside due to the wind and bins etc have gotten blown about. I was due to go out but won't now as its not an essential trip - I saw a lorry get blown across a lane on the motorway once (there are stretches here where its really exposed) - luckily no-one was in the neighbouring lane at the time but its not just rain and getting buffeted yourself that's a risk - taller vehicles could get blown into you so I wouldn't personally plus a lot could change during that 3 hour trip.

I didn’t realise, thought it was just up the west coast! Luckily it’s died down a little bit but was very noisy this morning.

Thinking positively, the weather will probably mean fewer people on the road and you might actually make the journey in less time. A while ago know, by back in March 2018 when we had a snow fall over the country there were dire warnings about not travelling, staying at home, essential trips only etc etc. I was in Liverpool, and it was essential I got home. So I drove through it, and while there was a lot of snow the motorways were clear and traffic light. I did that trip in the shortest time I’ve ever done it, and I didn’t even have an SUV. Just a regular rear wheel drive Mercedes 🤣🤣

Well about 9.5 hours door to door but then about 3.5 hours of that was lunch, shopping and various toilet stops (menopause bladder)

No quicker and no slower than expected, no delays apart from the permadelay that is the Dartford crossing, only two lanes for some reason, plus the usual speed restrictions for non existent never ending roadworks. Rain, and a bit blowy in parts but nothing that I would consider particularly hazardous. Didnt seem any quieter on the roads.
