Abandoned Stuff

I’m lucky to live in a well-heeled, well-kept, leafy suburb. Think tree lined streets of Victorian villas and 1920s semis.

We moved here 4 years ago. The road below ours has a long-ish stretch of road with no houses, and parked on that road is a small truck. It was there when we moved in. It’s still there now, getting slowly more covered in moss and filth as each year passes.

It’s perfectly parked; no sign of damage. No indication it’s been stolen and abandoned. it’s never moved in all those years - you can tell from the dirt slowly gathering round the wheels.

I’m genuinely intrigued about why it’s there. Who owns it? Why did they park it and never come back?? Is this common?

Owner parked it then died. Family didn't know they still had it/ where it was?

Neurodivergence? My batty aunt has hoarded her last two cars and kept them decomposing on driveways (not her own but other family members) until someone else organised scrapping the car.

Owner can't drive now and it's a case of out of sight/ out of mind.

Could be any of those, I suppose.

The thing is, it’s not a cheap vehicle. It’s a newish, biggish workman’s truck with a flat loader at the back.

You can check when its MOT is due up by looking online.

Gingerkittykat · 07/12/2024 01:05

I'm assuming it is not taxed or insured so you will be able to report it to the council for removal.

Or, you could decide it's not parked near homes or inconveniencing anyone and just leave it and it's owner be.

Yes it's common to have something life changing happen and not have the money or support networks to manage the side effects of it to hide your downfall from others.

I was unexpectedly hospitalized for over a year and then struggled hugely to acclimatize to major disability and allowed to drive CV's again. Many things including vehicles went unattended to during that time (though attempts were made to have windows washed) while I had to prioritize not losing my Dc's and home and learning to adapt.

So many people with too much time on their hands or invested in 'Rules are rules no matter what the situation' made it their business to make things worse and financially crippling for us, including reporting me as having "abandoned" my accommodation and get that taken away too.

You never know what's going on in people's lives. Covid and lockdowns was a disaster for many WC trades who are left behind still trying to rebuild now.

It's unlikely to be abandoned, it's a vehicle that can be made a living from, probably waiting for someone to have the time/money/energy/health to fix up, find a major part for at affordable rates, or be able to afford / pass medical etc to insure to work it, and they've parked up where it doesn't inconvenience. Is it actually hurting you in any way?

Being MN it's off course atrocious CF behavior and encourages the idea that the 'wrong type' might also live in their "well-heeled, well-kept, leafy suburb"s.

If you are planning to cause trouble for it's owner, consider putting a note on it warning them that you can, and will be. Someone almost certainly keeps an eye on it for any changes or trouble coming. It's a more decent thing to do, if you must do something.

Is it taxed and has an MOT? Check online. It's illegally parked if not and so you report it. The roads are not a car storage facility.

Azandme · 07/12/2024 06:47

Is there an old woman living in it? Are you Alan Bennett?

The roads are a car storage facility for those who have the means to pay to do so.
As long as you tax and insure annually you are entitled and permitted to store as many vehicles as you wish on the roads, regardless of if they are in use or not.

Yes. That's not what I was saying.
