Can you get pregnant with adenomyosis?

Posting for traffic, and I’m a bit worried.

I’ve had some mid cycle bleeding, long story short seen two consultants privately. Ultrasounds with both.
one said I have cervical ectropian and nothing more.
the other several months later said ectroprian. On the second scan the dr doing the scan said she could see some adenomyosis but said it was mild, and normal for a woman who has had 2 children before.
saw consultant today and he said in one breath that it means I have endometriosis but then on our first appointment he did and exams and said it was very very unlikely. I mentioned this again and he was like mmm yes, well it’s possible you have it but it must be very mild and you don’t have any real symptoms and he couldn’t feel it in exams (endometriosis is his specialty).
he also said adenomyosis does not cause fertility problems only in extreme cases, which I don’t have.
is this true?

You need to see a doctor working in the field of fertility.
Endometriose/adenomyosis is known to causer fertility issues. And are very hard to diagnose.

This consultant was, both were, their specialties were reproductive issues.

I explicitly said I know someone with adenomyosis who can’t conceive and he said that’s false information, only in very extreme cases does it impact fertility

Well you asked the expert already so mn won’t know better. Sounds like they were saying there are no forseeable problems.

except the consultant contradicted himself, a few times actually and just looking up adenomyosis infertility comes straight up

I had two children with severe adenomyosis. It was only diagnosed when I had finished my family and had to have a hysterectomy. Hope that helps! Hysterectomy went very well and changed my life for the better too

That’s reassuring thank you! He compared a scan to prior to my second child and I didn’t have it then.

did you have symptoms? My periods aren’t especially heavy and I have no pain. It’s just the odd bleeding between periods. And then it’s not heavy, but I never had it before. So I guess it tracks

Horrendously heavy periods all my life every 21 days or less. But no one spotted the problem till after the operation. I had no problem getting pregnant though thankfully and my period stayed away until I finished bf but always got worse again

I have both and had twins naturally before I was diagnosed. Go see a specialist.

When you Google, the algorithm will throw up most searched answers. It sounds as though your case is not severe but severe cases CAN not WILL cause fertility issues.

Did you definitely get diagnosed with adenomyosis already?

I had a delayed period Dec last year (work stress) and then no periods but very bad pains for 3 months (edit: early this year) - it was after I'd started taking folic acid and I could see online including Mumsnet women talking about delayed or missed periods as a result of taking it, but kept being told there wasn't research to support this (sounds like it's not been proven not to be the case but just no research has been done into it).

I got told they could see what looked like some mild adenomyosis when we went for a private scan, and that it could have an impact on conceiving. I was also told my ovaries looked polycystic, which I'd heard before, but tested negative for PCOS years ago, so I then spent ages googling what the difference was and fertility impact. I then had a GP call me after my NHS scan and suggest I might have PCOS without the usual physical symptoms and that we could be eligible for earlier fertility intervention, as in if we TTC without success for a year +.

Anyway we went on to conceive first month trying, I'm 7 months currently! I wonder if I'd built up tissue due to the missed periods and that's what was visible on the scan.

Edited

I’ve been told I have pcos / I don’t have pcos for years. It’s very confusing.

ive Seen two consultants this year, the first reviewed a scan from 2022 and said yeah that doesn’t look like pcos. Then did another scan earlier this year and said yeah not pcos, this was also echoed by the dr who did the ultrasound. The second consultatant reviewed the scan done this year and said hmm looks like pcos so ordered another scan, the same dr who did the previous scan said, nope not pco. I had bloods done day 3 of cycle which saw my lh higher than fsh which the consultant said can be seen in pcos but then my testosterone was on the low side which isn’t typical for pcos. My cycles are slightly irregular from 34-39 days.

this was the first time adenomyosis was mentioned and it wasn’t on a scan after my first was born, but the dr who did the scan said common with people who have given birth, esp more than once.

I didn’t get my cycles back with my second until 17/18 months post partum

Well anecdotally I've had 4 babies while suffering from adenomyosis and I fell pregnant with them very easily

Torturedsoul · 07/12/2024 10:15

I have endo and adenomyosis and I have had successful pregnancies.

Lots of menstrual conditions can cause infertility but that doesn't mean they do. Google tends to give you the worst case scenario - because people who don't have any ill-effects from their condition don't tend to post online about it.

greengreyblue · 07/12/2024 11:00

Lots of women with no known menstrual conditions struggle to conceive. I don’t mean to be trite but you won’t know until you try and it certainly doesn’t sound damning. Just go for it and stop stressing- easier said than done but stress is definitely not good for conception chances.

We’ve been ttc for 6 months and I’m 35.

no where near menopause (the consultant ran tests) and strong ovarian reserve.

need a hysteroscopy to check inside the uterus for a polyp as a cause for the bleeding
