Would you move DC school and home in year six..

..if it meant they would get into the secondary
school of your choice. Very good school, the understanding was that DD would get in as she will be moving to her dads for secondary school and has siblings there which guarantees priority entry. School & council then came back and said that sibling priority doesn't count unless DD lives at dads from now. A court order stating move from next year is happening isn't good enough.

Option now is DD moves to dads immediately and attends a new primary school for remainder for year 6 - she is happy about this.

Alternative is to keep DD with me and not get accepted into school and maybe a space will come up at some point but it's over subscribed so maybe not - and that will mean a move in secondary school which I don't think is good. Until then will have to attend a not so good secondary school near mine.

What would you do?

I would move house and maybe consider moving schools for a short period to get DC into an outstanding school, IF the local school was dire. But I would not consider it if it meant DC wouldn’t live with me.

Children move into our area in yr6 for secondary schools. Means they have a chance to make a few friends before they start secondary.

If the application has already happened (isn't the deadline end of October?) then check with council whether a move now would mean she is treated as an on time applicant. You could find that even moving now, starting a new primary etc, that she is still considered late applicant and isn't offered a place.

Is Dads house commutable to current Primary?

GrumpyCactus · 06/12/2024 20:55

Absolutely not. A good school is good but it is certainly not worth disrupting not only her last year at primary school but also her home living situation.

I really doubt the other options are so dire that you'd rather she didn't live with you than attend a less good school.

LIZS · 06/12/2024 20:56

Once she moves presumably she would be higher on any waiting list.

BeerForMyHorses · 06/12/2024 20:56

Hasn't the application deadline already passed though?

Does DD want to live with dad or is this just so she can go to the school ?

In answer to your question - no. I wouldn't move my child's school/home and primary parent for a school place.

minihashbrowns · 06/12/2024 20:57

The plan was always for them to move to dads for year 7 - I've accepted this is their wish. But move would have to happen this week to guarantee that place. Deadline is next week, have been going back and forth with councils.

If the move to her dads is happening anyway, I'd move her now, so she could make some friends who might move up to secondary school with her. Could she live with you part of the time for a while?

minihashbrowns · 06/12/2024 21:06

DD will stay with me weekends and half holidays

Would you even be able to evidence her move at such short notice and can she still continue to attend her existing primary in the meantime?

Theperenniallaunderess · 06/12/2024 21:24

I suppose not quite the same but my best friend moved from one end of the country to the other when we were midway through year six, because her parents separated. She loved the new school!
