I have just mentioned to DH I have ordered some wine etc to come on shopping for various people like hairdresser, nail lady etc he seems genuinely surprised that I buy them Christmas presents surely this is normal and something most people do?

I would say it's not something most people do.

Nerdles · 06/12/2024 16:10

It doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong though

hopeishere · 06/12/2024 16:23

Teachers, classroom assistants, bus driver and escorts
Cleaner
Sometimes my hairdresser

Doggymummar · 06/12/2024 16:25

Hairdresser had hers yesterday, nail technician, window cleaner he had his today, person whose dog I borrow that's it.

SpeculativeHoumous · 06/12/2024 16:26

You must be LOADED

hulahooper2 · 06/12/2024 16:46

i’m surprised some folk don’t do that

Planesmistakenforstars · 06/12/2024 17:40

I don't think it's that normal to have a hairdresser or a nail lady that you see on a personal basis so regularly that you would give them a Christmas present. But if you do and you can afford it, then erring on the side of generosity is a lovely thing to do.

Isseywith2witchycats · 06/12/2024 17:44

I buy for my 3 grown up children presents, and their partners, the grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren I give them money that's it my partner and I don't buy each other anything as we are at that age where we have everything we need or want

ManhattanPopcorn · 06/12/2024 17:51

It would never cross mind to buy them some thing. I do, however, leave a decent tip at Christmas, which I suspect they'd probably prefer.

Optunia · 06/12/2024 17:55

We do dog walker, postman and cleaner outside of family

Sallyingon · 06/12/2024 17:56

No..just family and close friends here.

GridlockonMain · 06/12/2024 17:57

I only see my hairdresser about twice a year so I don’t think we’re on Christmas present terms 😂 I only buy for family and one or two close friends.

I get token gifts for my son’s nursery workers and dance instructor but that’s it.

EliCopter · 06/12/2024 17:57

Yes I got a little something for my hairdresser, doctors and various other professionals whose services I’ve used this year.

Tarnishedbutton · 06/12/2024 17:59

Only person outside of immediate family and my toddler daughters 'friends' token gift I'm buying this year is a little token for my manager who has been particularly kind and valuable to me through a hard year and my daughter's nursery who will both get around £5 spent.
I'm not being Santa claus!

NolongeraboutShaun · 06/12/2024 18:05

Always "proper" presents for the grand-children, and they will get a stocking each this year as they will all be staying with us.

Usually send the adult children a case of wine or an Amazon voucher.

Small stocking for the grown-up children/partners as they are here with us this year. We are happy to buy all the food and wine but they will often offer to get (e.g.) the meat or the desserts. They are very good at sharing the cooking and they do all the clearing away and washing up - we trained them well!

DH and I don't do a big present anymore, just little things like socks, chocolates and/or a book.

We have 4 nephews/nieces. We haven't bought for them since they were 18. I no longer exchange gifts with my sibling and their partner - we will arrange to go out for a meal at some point - money that would have gone on gifts/postage is spent on that.

We still exchanges gifts with OH's brother/SIL (because he won't have the conversation about stopping) I don't get involved, other than to sigh at the utter waste of money they buy really shit presents.

Small gift for long-term friend and her OH. It is usually home made and/or silly. They reciprocate in the same vein.

Mrsttcno1 · 06/12/2024 18:07

I think it depends, if you use the same hairdresser and nail tech regularly all year round then yeah I think most people probably do. I get my hairdresser something usually wine/candle/chocs!

Meadowfinch · 06/12/2024 18:11

I buy for my son, my siblings and my friends.

I usually take a tray of home made gingerbread Christmas trees into the hair salon, and another into the office.

evtheria · 06/12/2024 18:11

I don't have any beauty/hair treatments, but my SIL works in that field and always gets lots of gifts - bottles of bubbly, flowers, etc.

I buy gifts for:
DS's teachers
Leaders of his regular clubs eg sports/Scouts

And cards for several others, like the staff at a cafe and bookshop I love, etc.

hopeishere · 06/12/2024 18:19

Oh and one year I gave the chemist some biscuits as they had been amazing with DH meds over that year.
