Neighbour’s Parking!

Hello everyone. I would appreciate any advice on how to navigate this issue?

For context, we live in a new build estate so you can imagine the developers have not provided much by means of visitor parking.

We park on our driveway. However, next door (semi detached) park on their driveway. However, the past few weeks they have had at least 5 other cars (sometimes six) parked along the front of their house. The house across the road also has a visitor that parks in front of the house (we think parents who look after the kids) which also compounds the difficulty we have reversing out of our drive. Leaving our house has become an utter nuisance as it takes many steering maneuvers and parking sensors constantly going off as we try to reverse out. It’s got to the stage where I would rather walk to the shop to avoid the palavar of trying to navigate through all the cars. Furthermore, there have been many near misses as the cars prevent us from seeing oncoming traffic.
This has been going on for months now so the goodwill we had at the beginning is waning somewhat.

We don’t want bad relations with any of our neighbours so would really appreciate any advice on how to navigate through this in the most diplomatic way possible.

Mention that you don't have enough space to get off your driveway? That would be the obvious idea.

Pootles34 · 06/12/2024 13:28

Honestly, there's not much to say. This is what happens when new builds and multi-car households collide, and why we would never buy one - not helpful to you, I know. Unless they are parking illegally, I think the only thing you can do is make sure you're reversing onto your drive, so you have better visibility.

Chamomileteaplease · 06/12/2024 13:30

Have you tried reversing in? So that you are at least moving forward to get off? But yes, speaking to them just stating the facts, might help.

HollyMollyPollyDolly · 06/12/2024 13:30

Is there anything in the deeds regarding street parking? I'm on a new build estate and our deeds state parking is only permitted on driveways, although this could be because I'm a cul-de-sac.

Alternatively, knock on and explain the issue or if you want to avoid potential conflict, if it affects a number of neighbours and wouldn't be obvious it was you, send an anonymous letter.

Unfortunately due to the way the cars are parking there is no room to reverse in. Literally blocked in

Park in the street across your drive.

Just wanting to repeat the above.........

Spinosaurus1 · 06/12/2024 14:00

Rules for any parking thread are a diagram is needed.

User820825 · 06/12/2024 14:01

I don't think there is anything you can do about it. I've lived in a similar new build street and I recognise completely you just walking because using the car is too complicated.

My advice is to keep out of it completely. I'd park elsewhere when expecting guests and tell them to park on your drive. I would not tell the neighbours that you are finding it difficult because people are absolutely nits when it comes to parking.

Aethelred · 07/12/2024 17:32

We have a really narrow drive with cars parked close on either side of the drive and pedestrians which are difficult to see on one side due to a neighbours hedge (sometimes cars are parked opposite us too), on a bend (going the worst way for visibility) on the main road through our village. The only safe way for us to get off our drive is to reverse on - it's not easy but much safer than reversing off the drive where it would be much more dangerous. It might take some getting used to but if it can be done forwards it can be done in reverse.

It really isn't.

Ganthanga · 07/12/2024 17:43

All they parked there all day everyday or are they just visitors? In the absence of any clear parking restrictions in your deeds, I would appeal politely to your neighbours in person and explain that you are struggling to get in and out and is there any way they could give you a bit more room? I think these things are always better done in person but whatever happens do not let it escalate into any kind of argument. Do not write an anonymous note, they will easily be able to work out that it's you! Alternatively park across your drive when you know you need to be able to drive away easily. Unless they are actually blocking you in or parking dangerously there's nothing you can do but appeal to their better nature.

Frosty1000 · 07/12/2024 17:49

Each time you have difficulty, knock on whichever door and ask them to move. Make sure it's each time and quite regularly and also mention you really don't want to hit their car. They'll get sick of moving the car each time so may give you more space in future.

RickiRaccoon · 07/12/2024 17:55

Can you ask the Council to put in any no parking lines just to help you get out of your drive?

blackpooolrock · 07/12/2024 18:06

park on the street in front of the house so it gives them one less space.

bubblesun · 07/12/2024 18:11

I moved to a road where the opposite side all have drives and drop kerbs and they all have 4 cars each. 4 houses.
And me with my one car and no driveway has to either stay at home and never drive to keep the spot upfront of my house or end up parking 5 mins walk away.

Actually put in permission for a drop kerb and have my garden being made into a driveway, works commencing next month.
Honestly can't wait as it will remove 3 spaces.

I think it's so selfish and entitled but what can we do. I guess one day I'll annoy people when my children end up getting their own cars too!

OldTinHat · 07/12/2024 18:16

You need to reverse onto your driveway and then drive out forwards.

Potentiallyplausible · 07/12/2024 18:19

Is anyone technically parking in front of your drive?

Potentiallyplausible · 07/12/2024 18:21

Ask the council to install residents parking. We have this. Maximum of two cars per property are allowed.

Dubbadubbadumdum · 07/12/2024 18:27

Sorry OP, if you can reverse out, you can reverse in...it might be difficult but it is so much safer to get out of the driveway when you have cars blocking your view of the road. Go and speak to your neighbours and tell them how much bother they are putting you to, if they are decent, they will move up a bit to give you more space to maneuver.

Bogginsthe3rd · 07/12/2024 18:28

OP sent me their diagram.

You need to reverse onto your driveway and then drive out forwards.

This sounds like the best option.
The next best option would be parking in front of your house
