Gift for son and GF

Wagasista · 06/12/2024 08:13

My son moved out a few months ago. He and his GF have a flat together.
I need ideas for something for them. My limit is £150. I could just give him the cash, but it would be a case of just transferring it to his bank. Doesn’t feel very festive!
so I was thinking of maybe giving him £100 and buying something with the remaining money?
id really appreciate some ideas as I’ve drawn a blank!
thanks

If they've just moved into a flat they probably won't have scratched the surface of furnishing, decorating or just kitting it out yet. Things like floor lamps, footstools, glassware sets can all be functional as well as elegantly designed. Depends what they still need and what their tastes are.

I always think nice glasses and maybe a bottle of fizz to go with it? (Plus the cash)

Don’t buy them furnishings that they haven’t chosen! That’s ridiculous, it’s their new home to design as they want. Maybe cash and ask them to pick something out that you can then buy them?

£100 gift voucher for a shop like Amazon, John Lewis or Habitat via Argos so they can choose what they want.

For the £30 I'd buy them a a cineworld gift box for 2 which includes tokens for film tickets and snacks. They've just moved into a new place so cash for nights out will be limited.

£100 John Lewis voucher and £50 spent making a food hamper with the fun Christmas food bits from marks and Spencer's would be my suggestion - I would love this and my 20 year old niece would also love this

Possibly the most boring thing but what about some sort of luxury mattress topper thing or nice pillows? And then the rest in cash / vouchers.

Agix · 06/12/2024 08:44

Don't do vouchers for the same reason as not buying furnishings. It might not be a store they want to buy from or has anything they like.

Your 100 cash and rest of gift idea is fab. Can't really say what to get them as a gift, as it depends on what they like as individuals.

I’d be boring and tell them, ‘I want to buy you a ‘thing’ rather than give money-can you think of anything worth £150 that I can get you?!’

We did this for mine and they chose a Ninja air fryer!

Frosty1000 · 06/12/2024 09:50

I'd definitely ask them for ideas, you've a substantial budget so best to go with what they want.

Onelifeonly · 06/12/2024 09:53

In my family we tend to ask people what they would like, unless we have a brilliant idea we are sure of. A surprise is nice but only if it's what you actually want.

Ask for a list of ideas if you want to keep an element of surprise.
