TLDR - I had a telephone appointment with the GP who fobbed me off and said my heavy vaginal bleeding is just an irregular period and refused to investigate further.

Full story - I was due on my period around 2 weeks ago but was approximately 6 days late and had a much lighter period than normal. Once it stopped I had spotting on and off for around a week, then randomly one day I had a sudden gush of bright red blood and needed a pad for the rest of the day. This only lasted one day, few days go by on and off brown spotting. Same thing happens again, bright red heavy bleeding, medium size clots, needing to change pad after an hour, soaking through layers of clothes just sitting on the couch, bleeding then stopped again for a few days.

Since Monday I have now experienced this every day for a couple of hours in the morning but then completely eases off the rest of the day until the next day. I have just been to the toilet and the blood is gushing out of me like water, bright red and multiple clots about the size of a 20p coin.

Dr Google isn't much help either as I can mainly only find info on spotting between periods but this is heavy bleeding. My female friends are also just comparing it to spotting but literally the toilet bowl is filled with blood and clots every time I go and I'm changing my pad often.

This doesn't feel normal but what could it be? And how do I get the doctor to actually listen to me and investigate?

I had similar, years ago and it was fibroids.
How old are you?
Can you book an appt with another doctor at your surgery?

I'm 32, been having periods for 21 years and always been fairly regular and normal.

I have never experienced anything like this before, did your symptoms just start suddenly too?

I could possibly try to get another GP appointment but my doctors are always so busy it was difficult to even get this one and worried about being dismissed again if I speak to someone again so soon. Feel like they want me to come to them and say it's been happening for months before they will investigate

Do you take contraception?

Do you take contraception?

No, nothing hormonal.

I have considered whether it could be an early miscarriage but my husband and I use condoms so have pretty much ruled it out as being highly unlikely as well as the fact I am not in any pain/having cramps and the bleeding is coming and going

Possible miscarriage. They come in all forms. I'd go to the early pregnancy unit tomorrow for a scan to see what's going on. It's not normal to bleed heavily for no reason.

Bobbie12345 · 06/12/2024 02:52

Condoms are unreliable as contraception. Even if you use them every time.
You could be describing an incomplete miscarriage. I would definitely see a doctor again.

Eenameenadeeka · 06/12/2024 06:37

Definitely get a second opinion

TMGM · 06/12/2024 07:22

You could call 111 and say you believe you could potentially be having/had a miscarriage, they should be able to refer you fairly quickly to an EP unit so you can rule it out as a cause, as your GP wouldn’t be able to confirm that either way. They should also check your ovaries etc while there. If it’s proven for certain not to be that I’d then go back to the GP.

Condoms are 98% effective if used every time. They are reliable contraception.

OP, you would not be unreasonable at all to seek a second opinion. Some GP’s can be awful for dismissing menstrual issues. Especially since this is still ongoing.

Luminear · 06/12/2024 08:05

Regardless of your age, this is abnormal for you and your cycles, that’s the top & bottom of it.

Can you not make an appointment and ask to see a different GP?

111 will likely not be able to help especially if you call within normal GP hours.
And it’s not right to take an appointment at EPAU by lying about “possibly having a miscarriage “. as a pp suggested.
Have you taken a home test to rule this out? Might be a good shout to be sure.

Good luck op, women’s health care is dire so I do sympathise with you. Fight hard, you are right to not be satisfied with the first GP.

The amount of friends who didn't understand what I meant when I explained this was mad. I had to say it was like water breaking. With blood. Mine was fibroids as well as thick wall lining which was easily treated. Def second opinion. Privately I was sorted in 2 weeks

HateLongCovid · 06/12/2024 08:42

I'd try docs again and if you can't get an appointment ring 111. Hope you soon get it sorted 🌸

Thanks for your advice.

Did you have ongoing issues before you were diagnosed? I have considered it being fibroids but I just wouldn't have thought the symptoms would come on out of nowhere so suddenly!

@TwoBlueDeer never had anything before. Oh actually I had it happen once after sex and I assumed I got my period dates confused but then connected the dots. They told me it really could just be hormonal too which is wild, that it could have literally no other explanation. So they've not 100% wrong but obvs there's a chance it's something else so should be investigated properly
